Orlando Fringe: Visual Fringe Storytelling

Bobby Wesley pulled together a storytelling event in the Visual Fringe. The idea is that the storytellers would pick two pieces of art that related to their story and those would be on the easels as they spoke. The event was held in the round planetarium room inside the Shakes.

I arranged to meet Keith Brown in the venue since he purchased a print of one of my sketches. He peaked over my shoulder as I was sketching. Then it turns out he was one of the story presenters. He told a story about one of his greatest tricks as a teen. He desperately wanted to meet a girl and had an otherworldly number of condoms in his pocket.

Bottom line, he was with teens who were someplace they shouldn’t have been and a policeman was there to catch them.

As the policeman was interrogating and lecturing them,  Keith began clandestinely removing fist fulls of condoms from his pocket and dropping them where they could not be seen. When the policeman pulled him aside, Keith offered to show the policeman a trick. Reluctantly the policeman agreed. When the trick was done the policeman said simply, “Pretty cool, you can go.” So Keith’s greatest trick as to use magic to evade the law.

Kaytlin Baily told a horrifying story of her decision to ride a rodeo bull ride right after a breast reduction surgery. I will not go into the gory details, and I already spoke about Megan Phillips incredible story of revelation and healing in a previous article. I loved the incredible diversity of stories from Fringe artists who come from every walk of live.

COVID Dystopia: Shot 1

In this shot the title zooms large quickly with a loud metallic sound effect while an ambulance flashes its way forward. Since the title is a bit off center it now makes me uncomfortable. I might center it exactly and see if that can work. The title could probably be bigger if I am not trying to avoid it overlapping the foreground building. When the title fades out the camera pans to the left following the movement of the ambulance.

This shot used to be a warning that you are about to see something that is horrific and you should probably run from the theater. That warning was needed to screen the film at Visual Fringe back in May of 2023. It took me a long time to decided to take the warning back out and replace it with this New York City street scene. Since the shot was intended originally to give people time to read the paragraph, it is the longest shot in the film.

I tried adding depth to the scene but it isn’t really needed since the buildings are all so far away and the camera doesn’t move. The shot lingers by just following the movement of the tiny ambulance. The only hint of the fast pace to come is the quick introduction of the title.

Every shot is like this in COVID Dystopia. I live with it for a long time and then decided it could be better. It would be great if everything was perfect on the first try but that is seldom the case.

Visual Fringe

The Orlando Fringe Winter Mini-Fest is January 9-12, 2020 inside the Lowndes Shakespeare Center at Orlando’s Loch Haven Park.  I saw several Facebook posts about the Visual Fringe tent and had to head out to see it for myself. The Visual Fringe is headed up by the incomparable actress, Melanie Leon whose comedic prowess has livened up several of the shows I have sketched at Fringe and around town. In front of the Visual Fringe tent were about a dozen orange lawn chairs so that an audience could sit of they liked to watch all the at happening.  I was happy to sit in a chair (theater seat) and started sketching. Melanie and George Cudo were seated in front of me. She joked with me and made me feel very much welcome.

I sketched Warren Hart (Famous After Death) who was working on a bold robotic image painted on a board covered in newspaper clippings. I loved the Famous After Death tag an wish I had thought of it. Also working was Osha Awesome who was doing a mixed media piece with melted crayons. Famed beside her were several framed Yin and Yang symbols with rainbows of melted wax.

After sketching Famous After Death, I checked out his portfolio on the table. It was a thick book full of gorgeous bold poster imaged from movies and other themes. I heard that he produces the work in Illustrator but he also explained that the iPad and Procreate have changed the way he works. He is desperately hoping that Procreate eventually gets vector based features which means images created could be blown up to any size. Since I have fallen in love with the program as well, we had much in common. It was awesome to meet another artist who is embracing technology in their everyday creative process.

Tonight is the last night of the Fringe Winter Mini Fest. To see a show you need to buy a $3 Mini Fest Button. Show tickets are separate and prices vary. Some shows I had sketched before during the 2019 Fringe.
