The Imperial at Washburn Imports

Shortly after getting separated back in 2016, I went to The Imperial at Washburn Imports (1800 N Orange Ave
Orlando, FL 32804) to meet a friend and discuss the lengthy and endless process  of trying to start over.  Washburn is an antiques shop in Ivanhoe Village that also sports a vintage bar. I have been to a few literary event here and I always order a different wine whenever I go here.  On this  night I ordered a Hercula Monastrell 2010, which I noted on the sketch. The wine producer is Bodegas Castano, from the Yecla County Heirarchy in Murcai Spain. It was a red rich intense wine which I would certainly drink again.

The person I was meeting was late, so I started to dash off this sketch. I am so used to going to venues on my own, that I don’t know how to be a truly social creature. Hopefully in time I will find the right balance between work and play.

The Imperial at Washburn Imports

The Imperial at Washburn Imports (1800 N Orange Ave, Orlando, FL 32801), is a neighborhood bar housed in a furniture store offers micro-brews and boutique wines, plus patio seating.
I met staff from Dix.Hite and Partners here when they wanted advice on setting up a sketch outing at lake Eola. Greg Bryla in particular  is a very talented Urban Sketcher. The firm designs environmental landscape settings and is now designing a temporary improvement to the Pulse Nightclub setting.

The sketch walk they organized was very well organized. They even catered food after all the sketching was done, although Orlando bike police insisted they take down the table that was set up to serve the food.

An Orlando city ordinance prohibits sharing food with large groups in downtown parks more than twice a year. Members of Food not Bombs were arrested in Lake Eola Park in 2011 for feeding the homeless. A compromise was ultimately found in which they can share vegan
food at Orlando City Hall every Monday morning and Wednesday night.

Our group was maybe 10 artists and landscape architects in all and not homeless but the ordinance still stands. So don’t think you can have a large family picnic in the park, especially with a table, you will be shut down. The food that Dix.Hite served was home made Polynesian fare that was delicious.

Paint the bride.

So, what do you do with your wedding dress when the wedding is over? Most women pack it away in a box and store it for eternity in their closet or attic. Kimme Priddle married Ed Hernandez and she decided to turn her wedding dress into art.

Current Galleries right above The Imperial at Washburn Imports (116 E 1st Street Sanford,

FL

32771) is run by local arts promoter Frankie Messina of Apartment E. Frankie loves the arts and bringing people together. He let Kim and Ed use the Current Gallery’s round room to exhibit their photographs and mixed media art. The highest price was $225 and the lowest $50.

In the center of the gallery was a small stage with a garden trellis acting as the framing curtains. White Christmas lights were spiraled around the trellis, shining like bright stars. Roses and yellow flowers along with fern and lace completed the elegant stage, along with a sign saying, “Paint the bride.” Wedding guests friends and artists took turns painting the dress being modeled by Kimme. I didn’t see who put the red hand print on her right breast. The room became quite crowded and I patiently waited for quick glimpses of the bride. The paint supplies sat a large wooden wire spool that acted as a table. Two bedside lamps illuminated the scene.

A daughter of the couple played tunes on an electric keyboard beside me. As quickly as the scene grew crowded and chaotic, it then quickly became still as everyone left. How wonderful would it have been if the groom and officiant arrived, also were painted and then the ceremony took place as well. Unfortunately the wedding happened either before or after.
