Lake Eola: Falun Dafa

I have started working with a new student on location and it is an opportunity to get out of the studio and explore the world with my sketchbook again. We met near the red pagoda at Lake Eola.

I decided to keep masked even though we were outside. My reasoning is that I have no idea when a person might get curious about my sketch and stand close behind me, breaking down my neck. Pam always jokes about some woman resting her huge boobs on my shoulder as she watched me sketch one time. I discovered there is an added benefit to wearing the mask in that people tend to stay clear, perhaps thinking I might be infected.

For the two hour duration of this sketch, I only saw one other person wearing a mask. Lake Eola was packed since the farmers market was in full swing. It would seem Orlando is done with COVID-19 although the virus is not done with Orlando.

There were 59,430 new coronavirus cases recorded over the last two weeks among Florida residents, bringing the cumulative total close to 6 million. With 230 more fatalities on record, 74,060 Florida residents have died so far.  Deaths have been dropping with the new BA.2 variant of COVID but there are reports that long COVID is more common with the new variant. Positivity increased over the past two weeks from 6.1% to 9%. On the risk assessment map of the United States Florida ticked up from yellow to orange today. The state reports only show Florida resident cases and exclude non-residents cases, which are no longer available. The state works hard to promote ignorance. Local NPR reporter Nichole Darden Creston tested positive for COVID-19 this week. The last time I saw her, she handed me a travel pack of free tissues to promote WMFE.

Falun Dafa is an ancient, high-level Chinese cultivation practice which uses gentle movements and meditation to cultivate the body, mind, and spirit. None of the practitioners were masked. It consists of five simple exercises that can be performed by anyone, regardless of age, physical condition, infection status or prior experience. The practice is meant to relieve stress and create harmony, as it cleanses the mind and body, and focuses on increasing wisdom, morality, and promoting spiritual growth. Falun Dafa is guided by the characteristic of the universe: Truthfulness–Benevolence–Forbearance. The practice began in China which is now allowing citizens to stave to death in it’s zero COVID policy lock downs.

As people went through the movements, a sales person handed out pamphlets and offered free COVID shaped plastic flower sculptures. I was offered a flower but don’t really need one right now.

Shadow Warfare

Forbes reported that 32 Russian helicopters have been shot down so far by Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion of it’s peaceful neighbor. NPR put that number at 125,  the BBC at 80, and Newsweek 77.

I have been following Ukrainian Officer Starsky on Youtube. His footage of a KA52 Russian helicopter reminded me of a burnt out skeleton of a demonic beast. The KA 52 is touted by Russia as a helicopter that can not be destroyed. Ukrainians conscripts shot down the helicopter in Hostomel.

Non-state militias are set to play a larger and less supervised role as the conflict set to explode in the Donbas of Ukraine. The Wagner Group on the Russian side is a 6,000-strong mercenary force, which is usually based in Africa and is believed to be funded by Yevgeny Prigozhin, a businessman with close links to Vladimir Putin.

About 1,000 Wagner Group fighters have been drafted in as part of the invasion. It was reported at the end of March that members of the group had been tasked with finding and assassinating the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky. They failed. Though continuing to cause massive destruction among the civilian population, the Russian forces continue to fail on every front.

Up to 20,000 volunteers, from all over the world, have joined up to fight Russian invaders. The goal of these foreign fighters is to save people and save civilians. The bulk of thee foreign fighters come from the United States, United Kingdom and Georgia, which has also been invaded by Russia. Members of this legion were the first to confront Russians at the airport in Hostomel, in the Kyiv region. The top thing needed in Ukraine is a no fly zone to stop the constant airstrikes and ballistic missiles that are constantly battering civilian populations. Since they can not gain victory on the battle fields, the Russians indiscriminately kill civilians.

COVID Convoy

COVID Omicron cases in Canada are coming down but they are still higher than any previous wave of the pandemic. Deaths peaked around January 29, 2022 but are still higher that the second and third waves of the Pandemic. Those numbers of course pale to the over 900,000 who have died in America.

Canadians are done with COVID but COVID is not done with them. The virus can not be wished away with the notion of individual freedom.

The “Freedom Convoy“, a large protest in Ottawa, Ontario, that began with truck drivers opposing a cross-border vaccine mandate continues to snarl traffic and disrupt everyday life in the Canadian capital more than a week after it began.

Ottowa is now under a state of emergency. On February 7, 2022, some drivers blocked traffic on the Ambassador Bridge, a key crossing between Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, CBC reported. They also got the backing of more than 100 Alaska truck drivers who rallied in support of the convoy, according to the Anchorage Daily News.

Some protesters say they’re staying until all public health mandates are lifted, while others have called for the dissolution of the current government, as NPR‘s Emma Jacobs reported. In addition, signs for QAnon, right-wing militias and Confederate and Nazi flags have also appeared among the protesters, Jacobs said. Ottawa police made several arrests over the weekend, seized fuel from some protesters and issued more than 450 tickets. A judge ruled that truckers couldn’t sound their thunderous horns for 10 days.

Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau, who is recovering from COVID-19, has said that engaging the military in response to the protests is “not in the cards right now.”

Beach Day

20 years ago, On September 11, 2001, I was off on  painting vacation in Colorado. In the morning I finished a plein air painting of a mountain range and I went to a fish camp to use the men’s room. A man outside the men’s room said the twin towers had been hit by planes as well as the Pentagon. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

Instead of doing another painting, I returned to the hotel and turned on the news. I let the gravity of hat as happening wash over me for the rest of the day.

It was impossible to fly back home to Orlando Florida, so I ended up driving back across the country. Several times I was rattled seeing crop duster planes spraying fields in the mid west. All air traffic had been grounded because of the terrorist attack.

On this 20th memorial, Pam and I drove to the beach for some peace of mind. NPR news on the radio was playing audio for September 11, 2001 but we couldn’t listen. 2,977 people died that day and it was a day of infamy much like the attack on Pearl Harbor for my parents generation. So far, between 2020 and 2021 659,558 Americans have died from COVID-19. Will their memories ever be honored in the same way? Or will Americans deny, deflect and immediately ignore the toll from a tragedy that could have been mitigated with strong leadership and citizens who worked together to keep each other safe.

Super Immunity

NPR reported that new studies have found cases of “Super Immunity” against COVID-19 infection in some individuals. Some researchers refer to the phenomenon as “Bulletproof.” Immunologist Shane Crotty prefers “hybrid immunity.”

Over the past several months, a series of studies has found that some people mount an extraordinarily powerful immune response against COVID-19. Their bodies produce very high levels of antibodies, but they also make antibodies with great flexibility, likely capable of fighting off the coronavirus variants circulating in the world but also likely effective against variants that may emerge in the future.

In a study published online last month, Paul Bieniasz and his colleagues found antibodies in these individuals that can strongly neutralize the six variants of concern tested, including delta and beta, as well as several other viruses related to SARS-CoV-2, including one in bats, two in pangolins and the one that caused the first pandemic, SARS-CoV-1.

So who are these super immune individuals? Were they bit by a spider or irradiated with a Vita-Ray? No, these super immune individuals are people who have had a “hybrid” exposure to the virus. Specifically, they were infected with the coronavirus in 2020 and then immunized with mRNA vaccines in 2021. These findings show how powerful the mRNA vaccines can be in people with prior exposure to SARS-CoV-2. Researchers don’t know if everyone who has had COVID-19 and then an mRNA vaccine will have such a remarkable immune response. The study only reported data on 14 patients.

I am wondering if this super immune response will also result from people who get fully vaccinated and then have a breakthrough infection of COVID-19.  Since we are all likely to meet this virus at some point, it would be reassuring to think we would become super immune after suffering through a minor infection. This research I believe has not been done yet.

Freedom

The vaccination rate has stalled in America. 41% of Republicans say they do not plan to get a vaccine, according to the latest PBS NewsHour/NPR/Marist poll, while 4% of Democrats do not want the vaccine.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that vaccinated Americans can take their masks off outdoors and indoors. They are over 95% protected from getting infected by the COVID-19 virus and its mutations. The un-vaccinated will not wear masks and they will spread the virus amongst themselves Extending the pandemic and resulting in more deaths.

President Joe Biden warned May 17, 2021 that coronavirus case numbers could rise once again in U.S. states with low Covid-19 vaccination rates. He said it would be a needless “tragedy” to see Covid cases rise among those who do not get vaccinated. Nearly 35 million Americans may refuse the shot. That’s how many Trump voters wouldn’t get the vaccine if the polling turns out to be correct, representing almost 17% of the adult American population. Among Magats, personal freedom is more important that life. The virus doesn’t give a crap about party affiliation. Biden further stated, “Those who are not vaccinated will end up paying the price.”

As of May 17, 2021, more than 154 million American adults, or 59.7% of U.S. adults, have had at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine and roughly 121 million American adults, or 47.1% of U.S. adults, are fully vaccinated, according to the CDC.

A study by Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School Of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland, of COVID-19 diagnoses and deaths from March to December 2020 found that a greater number of people died in states led by Republican governors. The study suggests that the less stringent remediation measures taken by Republican governors have likely led to the deaths. The study offers evidence about the danger of political polarization.

What Do You Have To Lose?

At the beginning of the pandemic, Trump handed off the Covid-19 response to Vice President Mike Pence because “He didn’t have anything to do.” Pence actually conducted some informative briefings though he continues to ignore science like showing up at the Mayo clinic without a mask. Every visitor at the Mayo clinic must wear a mask. When Trump saw the ratings of Pences briefings, he decided he indeed had time to stand in front of the microphone. The White house Covid-19 briefings became mini rallies and a chance for Trump to play the blame game. His concern didn’t seem to be the health and well being of the nation but his re-election chances.

On April 4, 2020 Trump was pushing an anti malaria drug called hydroxychloroquine as a cure   to Covid-19. From the podium he pushed the rug like a snake oil salesman, saying, “What do you have to lose?” “I may take it. I have to ask my doctors,” he added. The Mayo Clinic
released a warning for healthcare providers last week about the dangers
the drug could pose on some patients, which includes it potentially
causing sudden cardiac death when taken. The European Commission
also announced on Tuesday there was no proof hydroxychloroquine or
chloroquine, which is also used for malaria, could treat Covid-19.

His April 23, 2020 briefing was historic. He made the following  comments after Bill Bryan, the head of the science and
technology directorate at the Department of Homeland Security, discussed
some research about how COVID-19 reacted to sunlight. This is a transcription of what Trump said… “So I asked Bill a question some of you are thinking of if you’re into
that world, which I find to be pretty interesting. So, supposing we hit
the body with a tremendous, whether its ultraviolet or just very
powerful light, and I think you said, that hasn’t been checked but
you’re gonna test it. And then I said, supposing it brought the light
inside the body, which you can either do either through the skin or some
other way, and I think you said you’re gonna test that too, sounds
interesting. And I then I see the disinfectant, where it knocks it out
in one minute, and is there a way you can do something like that by
injection inside, or almost a cleaning. Because you see it gets in the
lungs, and it does a tremendous number on the lungs. So it’d be
interesting to check that. So you’re going to have to use medical
doctors, but it sounds interesting to me, so we’ll see. But the whole
concept of the light, the way it goes in one minute, that’s pretty
powerful.”

As Trump made the comments the reaction of Dr. Deborah Birx sat quietly on the sidelines, her face contorted in agony at what he was saying. Any respect for the doctor was lost as she sat silently. To keep her job she could not directly contradict the POTUS. She has had to defend his fantasies in the following days.

Injecting oneself with bleach or some other sort of disinfectant is not only incredibly dangerous and even life-threatening, but it would not be an effective treatment or cure for COVID-19. In the wake of Trump’s press conference, both doctors and manufacturers of cleaning products like Lysol warned people not to ingest or inject disinfectants.

New York City’s Poison Control Center saw a spike in the number of
people ingesting household cleaners after United States President Donald
Trump raised the possibility of using disinfectant inside people’s bodies to fight Covid-19. The non-profit National Public Radio (NPR) reported that the center
registered 30 cases in an 18-hour period ending at 3pm on Friday (April
24), as opposed to only 13 cases for the same time frame a year ago. Nine of the cases were related to exposure to Lysol, 10 were
“specifically about bleach” and 11 were exposures to other household
cleaners, the city’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene spokesman
Pedro Frisneda told NPR.

Bryan Fulwider: Faith After Pulse

This post discusses the shooting that took place at the Pulse
Nightclub on June 12, 2016. It contains difficult content, so please do
not read on if you feel you may be effected.

This article and sketch have been posted with the express written
permission of the interviewee. Analog Artist Digital World takes the
privacy and wishes of individuals very seriously.

This post summarizes Bryan Fulwider’s responses during an interview. On the day after the Las Vegas Harvest Festival mass shooting, Reverend Bryan Fulwider, one of the Three Wise Guys on NPR’s Friends Talking Faith spoke about his experiences following the Pulse Nightclub massacre here in Orlando. He mentioned Thomas Lynch, a poet, writer and mortician who said, “There is nothing like death to cause people to press their noses up against the windows of their faith.” This is the reality that can cause us to ask the ultimate questions like, why am I here? What is life all about? What happens when I die? In every religion there is some idea of death and what it means. They all seem to conclude that death is not the end. There is always hope built into the reality of death. Life is not meaningless.

That person who perpetuated that heinous act in Las Vegas, if they ever made any meaningful contribution to society, that no longer matters. You think about how you live your life, and the things you do and you would hope that the sum total at the end would contribute positively to the world. These acts of barbarism, and viciousness and hate simply erase an individual. In all traditional religions it sends you straight to hell. Maybe hell for those who don’t believe, is simply to cease to exist. We don’t use the name of the Pulse shooter in our community. He is not a person of consequence. He is not worth remembering as a person. That is the sad reality if your life ends in treachery.

Bryan was called to the Winter Park First Congregational Church in 1999. It was not yet an open and affirming congregation but it was welcoming. Before he left, it became open and affirming to the LGBTQ community. In 2012 he made the transition out of local church ministry into a broader community ministry. Together with Imam Muhammad Musri, and Rabbi Steve Engel, he helped found Building Us which now houses the Interfaith Counsel of Central Florida. They also started the radio show Friends Talking Faith.

When discussing the rights of women there is an across the board understanding among religions that women should have basic human rights. They stand pretty much unanimously against policies that are anti-women. While they may not all agree about reproductive health issues, they do agree that woman should be treated with respect and that they have the right to their own decisions.

On June 11, 2016 the Three Wise Guys were getting ready for a show the next day where they would visit a Turkish family for their Iftar dinner, which is the evening meal with which Muslims end their daily Ramadan fast at sunset. On June 12, he got up early, around 5 am, and was getting ready for a sermon at the Unitarian Church. He rotated out of bed and put his feet on the floor and immediately picked up his phone to see if there were any important messages. The Pulse news flashes lit up his cell phone screen. He subscribes to the New York Times and they were reporting about a shooting at an Orlando club. He was immediately on high alert. He wondered if there might be someone there that he knew. The reports at that point were very sketchy. The siege had just ended and they were rushing people to hospitals. He immediately texted half a dozen friends who might have been there. Little by little he got responses back that they were waiting to hear from others they had not heard from yet.

He could not fathom all that had occurred. By the time worship started at 10 that morning, the report was that 20 had died and a number injured. The sermon became all about Pulse. His phone was on the pulpit next to him. As the worship ended, a news report confirmed that 50 had died. They included the shooter in that number. Disbelief prevailed. He was shocked and stunned and could not process the news. As that news sank in there was a pall over the congregation.

The Three Wise Guys debated whether they should go to the recording session at the Turkish home that night, but the family had prepared, and were planning for them to be there. The Imam had been out in the hot sun all day because he had been called immediately when the shooter was identified as being from the Islamic community. Bryan drove down after church but felt there was nothing to be done. Later he realized he should have driven to the hospital. He doesn’t speak fluid Spanish but he could have gotten by. Perhaps the shock kept him from thinking about that. People were bereft, not knowing if loved ones were there or not, alive or dead. The whole day was a blur.

After sun down the three men went to the Turkish family home for Iftar. All the conversation that night was about what happened at Pulse. There was a prevailing feeling of depression, the small children thankfully did not understand. All the adults were somber. There had already been some kind of call for harm to the Islamic community because of the shooter. Candidate Trump was focusing on the shooting as an act of terrorism. Yet this kid was born in Queens not far from where Trump grew up. Like Las Vegas this was domestic terrorism.

That night the 3 wise guys shot a video offering condolences, sympathy, love, and compassion for the community. There was so little that could be said other than to be a sign of hope in a very dark and uncertain time. The community quickly decided that we will not be defined by the hatred that this act represents. We will define ourselves by love, by compassion and by embracing one another. The LBGBTQ community was opening a dialogue to remind people who was most affected by this. It was the beautiful, full of life youth who had been dancing there that night. The community began to stand together rather than allow itself to be torn apart.

A radio show was recorded and ready to air the week after Pulse. Bryan called the executive producer and asked them to not run the pre-recorded show. He wanted the show to be recorded live so they could address what had happened. The Rabbi was leaving for Tel Aviv, but he was ready to call in. Michael Farmer from Equality Florida, and Reverend Kathy Schmitz from First Union Church joined Bryan and Imam Musri in the studio. The show was broadcast state wide. It was a raw program with people trying to make sense of the unfathomable. It was a chance to grieve together, think together, and to call for a community of love and compassion.

Bryan and the Imam opened the ceremonies at the Dr. Phillips Vigil. Someone from the Mayor’s office called saying they
really wanted everybody to rethink being there for security reasons. They could
understand the concern for public safety, the police force was stretched
thin at that point. The organizers pleaded, saying that we really needed
to have this. People are hurting and they need to be together. The
mayor’s office said, “We will make it happen.”
They hoped to offer a bridge of faith and life, helping people find their way through the early hours of the aftermath. The vigil at Dr. Phillips was remarkably hopeful. Bryan took a photo from the stage of all the candle light going all the way back to City Hall. It was such a powerful moment of the community saying we will not give in to hate and violence.

Bryan and the Imam were also the religious presence at the 50,000 person vigil at Lake Eola. Joe Saunders called them to be a part in that vigil. A Muslim group was handing out water shoulder to shoulder with an LGBTQ group. The work of the media that week was well done and thoughtful. It opened up conversations like, who are the LatinX community, the LGBTQ community? The wise guys would lead the conversations. They reached out to families and survivors being sure to be non-intrusive, but being available. Every show on the radio for the next 3-4 weeks was Pulse related. Dan Kirshank who wrote, “The Bible Tells Me So” said that religion ran all through the Pulse shooting from the young people who were at the club, that might not be welcomed in their own religious communities, to the shooter who was identified as Muslim, to the preachers who may have had anti-LGBTQ sermons who now had to face their own bias. Promoting an anti0gay rhetoric in a house of faith is a bad idea. The horror of Pulse triggered the ongoing religious conversation and there is a lot of work to do.

Bryan prays that, “We will not rest until we have put an end to this kind of unspeakable violence and this kind off violence is worn in our hearts, its worn in the way we think, and the way we think about others, its worn out of our own sense of self destruction, and the need to force that upon others. He  wishes that we would have an honest conversation in this country about gun violence and sensible gun legislation. And that we would have an honest conversation bout mental illness and about the things that need to happen if someone is teetering on the edge, and that we would have a continuing conversation with religious communities about how dangerous some of the rhetoric can be. If you are feeling isolated, depressed, lonely, come talk to us. We are here to help with the problems you are facing. If we don’t address this continuing issue, in our society, and culture, we are going to be in ever deepening waters of trouble.”

Post script: Bryan Fulwider
was arrested on October 2, 2019 and booked into Seminole County Jail
following an allegation of sexual abuse of a minor who reported being
sexually battered by the pastor between 2005 and 2010 while he was in a
position of authority at Winter Park First Congregational Church. He
faces 30 counts of sexual battery of a person younger than 18 years old. Bail was set at $700,000. He committed suicide.

21 Chump Street at the Fringe.

Located in the round patrons room (Purple venue) in the John and Rita Lowndes Shakespeare Center (810 Rollins Street Orlando FL), 21 Chump Street written by Lin-Manuel Miranda creator of
‘Hamilton’ and ‘In The Heights’, turned out to be a high energy musical about being entrapped by love.  The show is based on a new report on NPR’s This American Life. A male high schooler falls desperately in love with an undercover cop. He would do anything to win her affection and a though he doesn’t use drugs, when she asks him to get her a fix, he asks everyone how to get the drugs she wants.  He doesn’t want her money he wants her love. She can’t convict him unless he takes the money. She sealed the deal with a kiss and slipped the money in his hand. Frozen and elated he couldn’t refuse.

Was the undercover agent just doing her job or did she arrest and convict an otherwise good kid? The music was edgy and hip. Short and sweet, this could be fleshed out to become an amazing show. It was well worth the admission price.
