Corsets and Cuties ICONIC at Fringe

After sketching Bullock and the Bandits at the Abbey, Pam wanted to extent the evening by going to the Stardust Lounge (431 E Central Blvd, Orlando, FL) to see the Corsets and Cuties show ICONIC. Stardust is a very small basement space. The main room is perhaps 10 feet wide by 20 feet deep. The venue was jam packed for this performance with standing room only.

Pam her niece and I were perhaps the only people wearing masks that evening. Rather then press into the crowd, I sat off to the side in the aisle that leads back to the dressing room for the performers. At one point the stage threatened to collapse and I was front and center to watch as several stage hands or bar tenders tried to re-assemble a microphone stand using their iPhone flashlight to see what they were doing.

Who’s your favorite iconic star? Troupe co-founder Lady Jaimz warmed up the crowd and also took part in many of the performances.  The one performance that had me laughing out loud was Barbi Rhinestone who dressed as Dolly Parton using two huge pink balloons as her boobs. She had to enter the staging area with her back to the audience for the big unveiling. I could only see a fraction of the performance but when the balloons started popping the audience roared.

I got to sketch the 27 May 2022 performance and it looks like the final performance was 28 May 2022 at 07:00 pm – 08:00 pm.

Hot, Hot, Hot!

Hot, Hot, Hot was one of the History in a Glass events held at the Orange County Regional History Center. On display were items from Orlando’s fiery past. On the table was a melted telephone recovered from a fire. Sparky the fire dog stood proud in his red suspenders. Pam Schwartz, the History Center chief curator introduced some of the history before the drinks started getting mixed.

Mainly historic photos and documents showcased Orlando’s history with fires. Back before fire trucks, Orlando Residents had good reason to complain that the fire department always showed up late to a blaze. The firemen responded that they had a stubborn horse who refused to pull the wagon, so if citizens got them a new and more energetic horse, then they could get to a blaze on time.

In the History in a Glass series, local craft bartenders competed for
bragging rights by creating libations inspired by historical themes and
artifacts. In the summer Central Florida gets blazing hot, so we cooled
off at this event with some hot-hot-hot history with
artifacts and stories of fires blazing, fireworks poppin’, and even a
fire insurance company with some risqué sales tactics!

As depicted in a historic photo from the museum’s collection, the American Fire and Casualty Insurance company had a sales meeting in which they had women come out only in a cardboard box. The sales slogan was, “We cover it all.”  Lady Jaimz of Corsets and Cuties recreated the risque sales dance. The drinks were indeed hot. Several were too hot for my palette. Domu won the bragging rights for the evening.

Corsets and Cuties Holiday Kick-off at the Venue

Pam Schwartz and I went to a dress rehearsal for Corsets and Cuties at The Venue (511 Virginia Dr, Orlando, FL 32803). With all the development in Ivanhoe Village, the Venue’s days are numbered. It will soon be demolished to make way for more development. This rehearsal was for a Christmas Holiday Kick-off. This Burlesque Cabaret troupe is not for the faint of heart, but for those with a sense of humor and adventure.

The Christmas tree was fluffed and decorated with care and the Cuties marquee was hung by the boys. An opening number featured Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer. All the dancers wore red antlers and pranced with innocent charm. Rudolf came with a glowing red nose until it too was stripped and left to the wayside to allow for some flowing gyrations.

Lady Jaimz explained that they had bought some Disney Costumes at a Lake Howell High School sale, so everyone had matching green holiday garb for the final number. A dancer wasn’t at the rehearsal, so We didn’t see every act but what ensued was the usual chaos and fun anarchy.

The December 1st performance promises a chance to start the season with some fun and teasing with Corsets and Cuties.
Doors and bar open at 9pm.
Showtime 10pm.
Special gifts from sponsor Premier Couples Superstore.

Tickets are $18 by pre-order or at the door.

Corsets and Cuties – Harlots at Fringe

The opening number alone makes this show worth the price of admission. The entire cast danced on stage in lavish Victorian attire as if at a party for Marie Antoinette. I was upset that number was over so fast. I only had the time to catch the MC, Lady Jaimz. But the cast gyrated and dances suggestively and the Corsets and Cuties were in their true top form. This burlesque company combines humor with their routines in unique and unexpected ways. Barbie Rhinestone started her routine off with sock puppets, but this was no kids fringe show.

Nicki Jax has a Cat Woman like way of moving that is fun to attempt to draw. My favorite routine for the night was set to the song, This is Me, written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. Members of the cast wore t shirts that carried labels set by bullies. Nicki’s shirt had the unlikely title of UGLY. NERD, CUNT, BITCH, the words had little meaning as they sang their anthem. I had never heard the song before and I was moved. Now I need to see the film, The Greatest Showman. All of these men and woman are great showmen. they were born to sing dance and entertain. Granted there was some lip syncing but there are also some very strong voices in the cast.

Harlots strip away the surface fashions and bear all with humor and heart.

This Fringe show is in the black  venue which is in The Venue, 511 Virginia Dr, Orlando, FL 32803. Tickets are $12 along with a Fringe button which is need to get into any Fringe show.
