Goodbye at Fringe

Goodbye by John Mark Jernigan a new play directed by Chris Crawford with music by Anthony R. Smith. The show starred T. Robert Pigott and he was seated center stage at the start of the show. Various interpersonal dinettes spiraled around him. Two men (Brian Brammer, Jeffery Correia) began an affair. One was cautious ant the other threw himself into the relationship without a second thought. A  young mother (Lauren Culver) was overwhelmed by the responsibilities of raising a new born child. She met a young man (John Mark Jernigan) in the park and his friendship helped give her strength. He adored the child and his attention gave her moments of rest. Later as she expressed her gratitude and affection he let her know that he was gay. The last relationship was between the main character and his sister. Their relationship was  about contentious but you could tell she loved him, despite their differences.

As these scenarios played out it slowly became apparent that they were all moments from the main characters pas life. He had been impetuous and passionate. He been open to ta young mothers plight and given her hope, and his relationship with his sister had given them both strength because of the shared history.

For some reason an urn stood quietly on a stool at the back of the stage.  As I sketched I wondered what it might mean. The main character began talking about his love of scuba diving and how quiet and serine it was under water. As he sank below the shimmering surface of the ocean he began to cry. Needless to say, it is hard to breath through the air tank respirator while crying. His sister reacted with shock and dismay to a call she received.

They say your life flashes before your eyes when it is your time to die. Perhaps that is what just transpired. Though never stated implicitly we were left wondering if that vase was full of ash. The lesson learned might be that we should live life without compromise. Nothing is guaranteed. All we can do is love and support each other along the way. The smallest kindness can have a huge impact on someone else’s life.

The Mystery of Irma Vep

The Orlando Shakes (812 E. Rollins St Orlando, Florida 32803) is presenting The Mystery of Irma Vep, a Penny Dreadful by Charles Ludlam through November 18, 2018. The title is the name of a character in the 1915 French movie serial Les Vampires and is an anagram for the word “vampire.”
The set by Bert Scott was fun with it’s forced perspective that would lead your eyes to the doors center stage. Even the floor boards all radiated from this central focal point. This is a perspective trick I often employ in my own sketches so it was fun to see the idea employed in the three dimensional design.

I didn’t glance through the program when Pam Schwartz and I entered the theater, instead I got right to work sketching. As actors got on stage I started populating the sketch and I wanted to be sure to get as many of the cast on the page as I could. First, I focused on the maid talking to Lady Enid and then I added Nicodemus who gestured up at the painting above the fireplace of the previous lady of the house, Irma Vep. When the sketch was done I put it aside and relaxed to watch the second act. That is when I finally realized that there are just two actors in this play. I had been duped by very different mannerisms and accents. Lady Enid was never on the stage at the same time as Nicodemus. Brad DePlanche played Nicodemus, Lady Enid, Alcazar, and Pev Amri while Chris Crawford played Jane Twistden, Lord Edgar, and an intruder. Some 35 costume changes take place in the course of the two-hour show.

The play is very tongue-in-cheek with lightning fast cross-dressing. There is plenty of sexual innuendo and comedic pauses with dramatic music and lighting cues to heighten the humorous mysterious mood. The director Jim Helsinger seems to be a master at milking a comic moment. The play has a dark and sinister past and features love, intrigue, and a sinister mystery. It was a fun night of theater and perfect for the Halloween season. Get your tickets today, but the Halloween performance is already completely sold out.

The Hound of the Baskervillesat at Shakes.

The Hound of the Baskerrvilles, written by Sir Conan Doyle was adapted for the stage by Steven Canny and John Nicholson. The 19 parts are played by just three actors. Steven Lane played Sherlock Holmes and I grew anxious since he didn’t play the part of Sherlock very often. This hilarious  production at times involved the actors breaking character and talking to the audience one on one. They poked jabs at each other for the past productions they had done. Dr. John Watson, (Simon Needham) was a natural at the British accent since he comes form England. The other actors joked that he is taking good paying actors work from American actors. Chris Crawford played Sir Henry Baskerville among other roles. The production involved many very quick costume changes.

After the first act there was an intermission and the second act began with Steven Lane reading a note form an audience member in the center section. It stated that his acting was lackluster and sluggish. The response was for the cast to re-act the entire first act at an insanely accelerated pace. This time costumes were often only half assembled as the actors ran around the stage to hit their marks. This was hilarious and impressive at the same time.

The Baskerville family suffered from a curse that began when a young woman was imprisoned at their Devonshire estate. A huge and vicious hound then attacked the guilty abductor. Since that date the family carried the curse. Each generation would suffer from the attack of a devilish red eyed  hound. The recent death of a Sir Charles Baskerville rekindled the story of the cure and brought in Holmes and Watson on the case. Holmes was busy but sent Watson to the estate to investigate.

There is an escaped convict on the moor and mysterious candle messaged sent at night. Sherlock takes multiple disguises to watch the activity of the state from afar. His several attempts to reveal himself to Watson, are hilarious since Watson is blinded by theater blindness that allows for a costume change to be an absolute disguise.  Myth and mystery eventually give way to thought and reason and the suspect is discovered.

We were seated in the back row of house left which was a great vantage point when the actors left the stage and wandered into the audience. I almost tripped an actor as he rushed out the fire escape door setting off the alarm. I highly recommend the show for a light hearted evening of theater.
