Five Centuries of Florida Cattlemen History

Photographer Bob Stone gave a talk at the Albin Polasek Museum and Sculpture Gardens in the Capen House (633 Osceola Avenue, Winter Park, FL). It was a crowded event so seating was limited. I went back to the car and got my artist stool so I could get to work sketching. A few seats did remain open, so Pam managed to sit as well.

The cattlemen history began way back in the 1500s when Spanish settlers first brought cattle to Florida. Raising cattle has been a long tradition in Florida. One cattlemen explained it this way, “You can plant crops, but at the end of the harvest you have to load that crop onto the train. The cattle just walk onto the train themselves.” It is possible that the word cowboy originated as a derogatory reference to blacks who worked raising the cows. One woman in the back row was a real character who clearly has been raised in the cattle culture. She pointed out that some whips used to be 15 feet long and someone she knew could flick a match out of your lips from 15 feet away.

Bob had an amazing collection of historic photos that showed how raising cattle has changed over the years. Ranchers used to create cattle “dips,” or troughs in the ground and fill them with a poison that killed the bugs. When development encroached, these toxic sites had to be cleared.

Christianity has long been ingrained in cattleman culture. One photo showed a cowboy being baptized in a metal cattle trough, while other photos showed bull riders praying before getting on the back of a bull.

After the talk, Rachel Frisby invited everyone to see the exhibit, “Lay of the Land: The Art of Florida’s Cattle Culture.” This show, in collaboration with the Florida Cattleman’s Foundation, explored the 500 years of Florida cattle culture through art and hand-crafted items such as saddles and spurs. My favorite discovery at the exhibit was the sketchbooks of Sean Sexton. He has been documenting life on a cattle ranch in his sketchbooks since 1973. I desperately wanted to flip through the sketchbooks, but they were behind glass.

Mike Perkins presented a Collective Narrative.

Mike Perkins, the Orlando Regional History Center director gave a talk at the Albin Polasek Museum‘s Capen House (633 Osceola Ave, Winter Park, FL 32789) titled “A Collective Narrative” about the museums efforts after the Pulse Nightclub massacre to collect and preserve the memorial items left at sites around Orlando.

The goal at the Orlando Regional History Center is to present History in an interesting way, You are going to have challenges as you work through your career, but you don’t expect to have something so incredibly changing, with such a huge impact to the community happen, and all of a sudden, while you are at the job it becomes your task to collect and retain this history that just happened. It was a shock to all of us. Pam Schwartz, who is the museum senior curator carried the bulk of this initiative.

It was of course the middle of summer. We had to collect at Lake Eola first since the city wanted to have July 4th fireworks. Collecting began on June 26th and went on for about 3 months? The question was directed towards two members of the museum staff, Emily Arnold, and Whitney Broadaway in the audience of seven. After Lake Eola was cleared, Dr. Phillips Arts Center (DPAC) became the primary site for a memorial.

Mr. Greg Zanis brought his 49 wooden crosses to Orlando Regional Health Center and that became its own memorial site. When the crosses were eventually collected, items left around the crosses were also collected. The crosses were stored in specially designed archival boxes and the items left at each individuals cross were put in an accompanying box in the museum archives. Photos are on the museum’s online digital archive that show the crosses when they were first put in place and then several photos document the memorial items as they were left at each cross. Mike gave credit to Emily Arnold for all the photos in his presentation but from the audience, she had to let him know that all the photos were by a photographer named Phelan Ebenhack.

All the candles couldn’t be collected. Only particularly beautifully decorated candles were collected the rest went into land fill (most have been kept for potential use). American flags that had touched the ground could not be collected. Those couldn’t go into the museum collection. After much of the memorial had been cleared at DPAC, Boy Scouts collected the flags and gave them to the military or fire department to be properly disposed of. There were huge banners that were often covered with other items and flowers. The banners were folded up or rolled up. Flowers could not be collected and they were turned into mulch. Keep in mind it was hot out. The sun and fading of items became a problem.

Candles would get kicked over and drip wax onto other memorial items. Items that were most at risk were collected first. The collecting was only the beginning of the work. Gathering was in some ways the easy part of the process. Once items were safely back in the museum archives, they were cleaned, and processed to be made stable for the collection.

Then of course Pulse became a memorial site and items are still being dropped off precipitously. So obviously a tremendous effort went into this. A tent would be set up and the History Center van would be close by. There were archival boxes, blotter paper, and a press, all to stabilize items so they cold get to the History Center with low humidity and temperature control. The collection now is called the One Orlando Collection and it has over 6100 items. The exhibit that we opened on June 12th was visited by about 700 family members. It was seem by about 2,400 people that week.

A question from the audience:Were people upset when you took memorial items away?”

Mike: “When we told them what we were doing, generally they thanked us.”

Question: “Did you call the City or did the City call you?”

Mike: “We are a County institution.”

Question: “How did that happen? Did someone say, ‘Hey you need to do this?'”

Mike: “It was an organic thing. If anyone deserves credit, it would be Pam Schwartz.”

Move It or Loose It

On Saturday September 14th there was a rally for The Capen House in Winter Park’s Central Park, adjacent to the rose garden. The citizens responsibly for trying to save the Capen house have a short window to make this happen, and they need the community behind this effort.This is a BIG , monumental,task  to move a home built in 1885 across Lake Osceola to the grounds of the Albin Polasek Museum and Gardens where it can be enjoyed by Winter Park residents and visitors for years to come! 

As of the date of the rally, $200,000 had been raised towards the project. An additional $450,000 would need to be raised by the end of November to save the house from demolition and reserve the contractors for the move. The house will have to be cut in half and then the parts will be floated across the lake on barges. The committee is hoping that the actual transport would happen on December 14th to coincide with the Winter Park Boat Parade.

In the tent, past Winter Park mayors voiced their support for the project. If funds aren’t raised, then the home will face demolition as it is replaced with a much larger McMansion. If it finds it’s way to the Polasec, it will be used for celebrations like wedding receptions and community fundraisers. It would become a place of celebration for many future generations. Relocating the Capen House to the Museum property is a mutually
beneficial solution for the current owners, Winter Park residents, and
the greater Central Florida community,” says Debbie Komanski, Executive
Director of The Polasek. The Polasek Museum property, with a sweeping
lawn to the water, can easily accommodate the 6,000 sq. ft. house which
will be used for public events and education offices for the Museum.
Moving the home by barge, not an unusual event in Florida simplifies the
relocation effort and significantly reduces project costs.

A small model of the home floated in a small plastic pool. Kids were encouraged to save the home by scooping up small balls with a net. Kids won prizes for scooping up the most balls. The Winter Park Owl wandered around like a Disney theme park character. He leaned over a small girl in a stroller and she began to cry. Orange infused water parched hot lips. The speeches continued and the homes future still remains uncertain.

Casselberry House

The Florida Painters Group had their annual exhibition at the Casselberry House (125 Quail Pond Circle in Casselberry, Fl) in June. The show included paintings from 15 artists, who are mostly landscape painters. I went to the opening reception to see the work.

Show participants were: Ann Gale Holstein, Robert Ross, Carol Platt, Cathy Hempel, Cori Garret, Diane Walters, Gary Rupp, Gary Sisco, Karen Minnigan, Kim Ashby, Laura Bates, Lynn Tolar, Lynne Polley, Mary Martin, Orit Reuben, Rosa Bujali and Seemi Usmani.

The paintings that most caught my eye were by Robert Ross. He did a painting inside the  Capen House. This historic Winter Park home was slated for demolition, but locals are raising funds to save the house and float it across the lake Osceola to the Albin Polasek Museum where it would be lovingly preserved.

After viewing the paintings I decided to sketch Louis Alfredo playing guitar. He was quite good and several people actually danced as he played. For the most part however people shouted at one another in the crowded space and didn’t notice the incredible talent in the corner.

Cami Smith who is an industry outreach liaison at Full Sail introduced herself. When she found out I had worked at Disney Feature Animation, she asked me if I knew Aaron Blaise. Of course I knew Aaron who had co-directed “Brother Bear“. He had taken a research trip to Alaska for that film and his sketchbook from that trip was absolutely inspiring. Aaron had gone on to work at Digital Domain in South Florida but that company went bankrupt before they could finish an animated film about an elephant. I heard Aaron was returning to Orlando. Cami informed me that he is hoping to produce a Computer Animated film called “Art Story” about a boy and his grandfather who travel into the worlds of famous paintings. She showed me the Kickstarter page and Aaron has successfully raised the $350,000 needed to further develop the story. I like the story’s message, “Life is a blank canvas, now go paint your masterpiece.”
