Composer’s Forum at the White House

The Central Florida Composer’s Forum presented their 4th annual Composer’s Salon Concert at the Timucua Arts Foundation (2000 South Summerlin, Orlando, FL 32806). Seven local Central Florida composers: Eric Brook, Stan Cording, Paul Harlyn, Dr. Chan Ji Kim, Dr. Seunghee Lee, Sharon Omens, and Rebekah Todia,  featured original compositions including local and world premieres in a diverse array of musical stylings. Instrumentation included, piano, violin, flute, saxophone, bassoon, bass guitar, percussion, and electronic music. This was a rare chance to hear music from some of Central Florida’s best composers. This sketch was done quickly at the beginning of the concert. I did a second sketch from  the second floor which I posted some time ago.

In July of 2016 I invited local artists to the Falcon Bar (819 E Washington St, Orlando, FL 32801) to create 49 portraits, one for each of the victims of the mass murder at the Pulse Nightclub. Benoit invited me to exhibit these 49 portraits in the entry to the concert. They were hung high in the wooden rafters and filled every inch of the available space. I was told that one of the composers complained about the portraits being on display since they felt it interfered with the atmosphere of the night’s performances. I am always shocked to hear of other artists complaining about art. To hell with propriety, it was an appropriate gesture. At the end of the evening, people had cell phones out shooting photos of the portraits in the rafters.

Central Florida Acoustic Fingerstyle Guitar Song Circle

Musicians gather monthly on the third Wednesday of each month at 6:00 P.M. til 8:30
P.M. in the community room of the Winter Park Public Library  (460 E. New
England Ave. Winter Park, FL 32789 for the Central Florida Acoustic Fingerstyle Guitar Song Circle. The public is invited to stop in and enjoy the music. I stopped in to sketch. This was a relaxing evening in which each musician in turn would perform a piece and other musicians could join in if the mood was right.

Any person interested in acoustic fingerstyle guitar is welcome no players can attend if they wish to listen and bring any friends along. All levels of players can join in because everyone will be exposed to many styles and levels of skills. The circle is very casual. They sit in a circle and share one at a time.

The group recently established some guidelines. By default, if it is your turn to play, then others in the circle are welcome to join in and play with you, as long as they don’t drown you out. If you do not wish to have accompaniment that is OK, but you must tell people this before you start playing.

For me this was a relaxing, casual sketch opportunity. I did two sketches on this evening and it would be nice to return to do more. Everyone is literally seating in a large circle as if around a large camp fire and each song sets the mood for the next. Check the groups Facebook group page for the next song circle.

These are the date through the end of the year…

Jack’s Birthday at Pig Floyd’s

Jack Graham held a birthday celebration at Pig Floyd’s Urban Barbakoa (1326 Mills Ave N, Orlando, FL 32803). I never turn down an invite and it was a chance to  try some barbecue. Other friends were there, and the evening was made more festive with some colorful childhood birthday caps.

Pig Floyd’s Urban Barbakoa offers you meat that is slowly-cooked all night, to give a succulent and tender barbecue that is second to none. Generously seasoned with sourced herbs and spices, the meat is packed with flavors unique to South America. There is also a selection of local beers, wines and iced beverages that pair well with the food.

The place was packed. My pulled Pork sandwich was decent but not really memorable. I haven’t returned since.

Jack recently had a sold out acoustic guitar concert at Blue Bamboo Center for the Arts (1905 Kentucky Ave
Winter Park, Florida 32789). He put out a call for art to be projected
on the stage behind him and I submitted one of my Blue Bamboo paintings.
I let him know that if he ever does this again, I could easily edit a
series of my sketches to fill the allotted time slot.

Corsets and Cuties: A Burlesque Cabaret

4th Anniversary and Amateur Show is coming to The Venue (511 Virginia Dr, Orlando, Florida 32803) on August 17, 2018. The award-winning Corset and Cuties puts a fun twist on Burlesque combining singing and dancing talents with some outrageous humor. They are celebrating their 4th year at The Venue so they’re giving you a chance to join the troupe on stage! Have
you ever wanted to try burlesque? Think you have the what it takes? Want to
cheer on your friends? Any and all are welcome at this annual party and
the audience chooses the winner!

And, of course, they’ll have a few surprises in store for all of you with a Cuties twist! The rehearsal was a fun mix of leather and lace along with brandished blades and rainbow flowing dresses. This is always an awesome sketch opportunity for me though the clothes fly off fast so the money shot seldom makes it into my sketchbook.

Please note, the doors and the full bar is open at 9pm to get you in the mood. The Cuties are always more friendly to those with tips. The show starts at 10pm. The show, full of fun and frivolity is not for the faint at heart, but for those with a sense of humor and adventure!

Your
name will be on the guest list to check in after tickets are purchased.
Everyone has a chance to win fun door prizes from our fab sponsor
Premier Couple’s Superstore.

This event is for 18 and up!

Milk Carton Superstars at FAVO

Faith Arts Village (221 E Colonial Dr, Orlando, Florida) hosts an  art studio open house every first Friday of the month.  They describe the art motel’s mission s follows: “In life and in extreme death we love. We at FAVO love all and celebrate life and community. Every
month we offer this art show to bring people together. We don’t care
who you are or what you believe in (or don’t believe in). Celebrate an evening of just being creative with local creative people.”

Bethany Taylor Myers has a studio in which she showcases work from a different artist each month. Her husband is the drummer and lead vocalist for a band called the Milk Carton Superstars.  They performed in the former motel room now being used as a gallery. They were lit from below and small fans blew their hair upwards giving the illusion that they were falling.

FAVO and Park Lake Presbyterian Church work hand in hand supporting all the Orlando communities. The next FAVO evening is August 3rd. The evening gets started after 5pm as the sun sets.

The Imperial at Washburn Imports

Shortly after getting separated back in 2016, I went to The Imperial at Washburn Imports (1800 N Orange Ave
Orlando, FL 32804) to meet a friend and discuss the lengthy and endless process  of trying to start over.  Washburn is an antiques shop in Ivanhoe Village that also sports a vintage bar. I have been to a few literary event here and I always order a different wine whenever I go here.  On this  night I ordered a Hercula Monastrell 2010, which I noted on the sketch. The wine producer is Bodegas Castano, from the Yecla County Heirarchy in Murcai Spain. It was a red rich intense wine which I would certainly drink again.

The person I was meeting was late, so I started to dash off this sketch. I am so used to going to venues on my own, that I don’t know how to be a truly social creature. Hopefully in time I will find the right balance between work and play.

Buyer and Cellar at Mad Cow Theater

Written by Jonathan Tolins, Buyer and Cellar is based on a very real but ludicrous idea. Barbara Streisand has set up a shopping mall in the basement of her luxurious farm house and she needs someone to watch over the merchandise. Actor Alex More, career hit a rod block when he cursed out a child harassing him in a Disney Land costume. He gets a break when told to go to a mysterious location. He is hired to man the private basement mall in Barbra Streisand’s house.

There was an annoying hum that I thought was an issue with the sound system, but turned  out to be the sound of the yogurt machine in the basement. Louie Gravance plays the lead role as the actor turned dapper curator in Barbara’s basement. He plays all the rolls  inn this one man show that is a tour de force of high energy acting.  I have such a deep respect for any actor who can retain so much material and perform it with such abandon. The roll called for some very flamboyant diva worshiping. Though he sees Barbara as very controlling, he connects with her on a personal level as they play a game of buyer and seller.

Philip Nolan who directs the play is a familiar face from many of the funniest productions I have sketched over the years. He worshiped the projector which had been painted black with such theatrical reverence, that I laughed out loud before the run through. Set designer Cliff Price recreated the opulent basement set.

I am so used to  seeing one man shows at Fringe, but those shows are only an hour long. Though I didn’t time the run through it was certainly much longer than an hour. For those who love Barbara or divas in general this will be a fun show. If you know little about Barbara, then at least listen to The Way We Were before you head to the theater. Now I wish I had painted a misty water color of the show, but a digital sketch made sense in the low light.

Buyer and Cellar has 16 shows running from August 10, 2018 to September  2, 2018 at Mad Cow Theater (54 W Church St, Orlando, Florida 32801). Tickets are $15 with a $2.50 fee.
