Alliance of Greater Orlando’s shelters and clinics this year.

“Pet Alliance is thrilled to have adopted
out 6,601 dogs and cats, rescued 1,453 pets from shelters that would
have euthanized them and fostered 1,749 puppies and kittens last year,”
says Special Events Manager Caryn Freas.  “We are extremely grateful for the overwhelming support, and we are excited to see our
animal loving community back out at Lake Eola Park for Paws in the Park
and to kick start what we hope is another phenomenal year of fundraising
for our much-loved and deserving furry friends.”

Pet
Alliance of Greater Orlando was founded in 1937 as the Orlando Humane
Society.  Since then, the organization has worked hard to provide
positive and safe outcomes for pets.  Today, Pet Alliance has a
dedicated focus on the welfare and well-being of dogs and cats in
Orange, Seminole and Osceola Counties.  As the “go to” experts in
Greater Orlando, they do good things for dogs and cats and the people
who love them.  Their goal is to provide compassionate and knowledgeable
services for pets and to be leaders in innovative animal care and
veterinary medicine.  Nearly 7,000 surrendered pets and homeless animals
turn to the Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando for caring, compassion and
hope through their shelters each year.  Pet Alliance provides food,
medical care and shelter for dogs and cats until they find their new
homes.  In addition to providing housing and care, Pet Alliance works to
develop progressive and innovative programs that help keep pets and
people together.  Pet Alliance also provides low-cost spay/neuter
surgeries and animal wellness through their public veterinary clinics.
Their shelter programs are supported entirely by donations from the
community they serve.  Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando has two pet
adoption centers (Orlando and Sanford) and three veterinary clinics
(Orlando, Sanford and Alafaya).  For more information, visit https://petallianceorlando.org/.

1:30pm to 4:30pm $5. Accidental Historian Urban Sketching Workshop: Sunday in the Park with Thor. For students 14 to 24 years old.

Bridging past and present, this workshop guides students to capture
the present day in a sketch beside the photographic past. Inspired by a
1920s photo by T.P. Robinson, we will sketch the Sperry Fountain at Lake
Eola. The fountain is made of wrought iron and has a duck base with
water flowing from the ducks’ beaks and an acanthus leaf.

Students in this workshop are tasked with creating a modern
interpretation of the fountain. The sketch will begin with the same
sepia watercolor tones that exist in the photo. In the distance,
however, is the amphitheater, which is brightly painted with the colors
of the rainbow. Trees will likely block your view of the fountain, but
you will learn how to walk around to catch a view and add it to your
sketch.

All skill levels are
welcome. Sketching materials will be provided by Sam Flax Orlando. The
sketching portion of the workshop will take place outdoors. Participants
should dress appropriately for the weather and bring water and a snack.
Participants can bring a folding chair or stool to sit.

About the Instructor: Thomas Thorspecken

Thomas “Thor” Thorspecken is an illustrator and journalist working in
and around Central Florida. He attended the School of Visual Arts in
New York City. In his ten years as a freelance illustrator in New York,
one of his assignments for the Daily News included sketching
historic buildings throughout the city for a column called “Undiscovered
Manhattan.” Thor relocated to Orlando in 1993 to work for Disney
Feature Animation. After a decade, the studio closed, and so he
continued to pursue his passion for art through teaching and sketching.

His website and blog, www.analogartistdigitalworld.com,
began in January 2009 with a resolution to post a sketch every day. He
describes it as “his way to finally put down roots, to become part of a
community, one sketch at a time.” More than 4,000 sketches later, he’s
still capturing our community.

In the
American heartland during the Great Depression, the provincial existence
of a rural farming family hinges upon the high school graduation of the
eldest daughter, Laurie Moss. However, on the eve of her graduation,
Laurie finds herself questioning her place in the world and wondering
what kind of life she could lead if she were to leave the farm. Her
restlessness is fueled by two drifters, Top and Martin, who are hired to
help with the harvest.

While Ma and Grandpa Moss are suspicious
of the strangers, Laurie is captivated by their vivid tales of travel,
and she and Martin quickly fall in love, culminating in a tender kiss at
Laurie’s graduation party. Grandpa Moss, furious, banishes the two men,
leading Martin and Laurie to make plans to elope, but Martin quickly
realizes that this would cause trouble for all involved, and reluctantly
sneaks away before daybreak. Heartbroken, Laurie realizes that, though
now alone, it is still time for her to go. She bids farewell to the farm
and sets off into the unknown, leaving her weeping family to completely
reassess their hopes, dreams, and plans for the future.

A vivid
portrait of the rural mid-west, The Tender Land is painted richly with
Copland’s quintessentially American harmonies and tells a beautiful and
simple story of a young woman’s coming of age.

Sung in English with super titles.

For the second year, Urban Sketchers Orlando is taking part in
10×10, the worldwide initiative to offer educational workshops wherever
sketchers live. Launched in celebration of Urban Sketchers’ 10th
anniversary in 2017, the program brings a variety of courses on urban
sketching techniques taught by talented local instructors in their home
cities. In 2017, cities around the world began offering 10×10, a series
of 10 courses telling the stories of our places. For 2018, Urban
Sketchers have a new creative plan of long term workshops.

DESCRIPTION:

When sketching events on location it is sometimes helpful to
search for the high ground to get an overview of the scene. From above
people are less likely to block your view. This class will discuss how
to place figures in the scene as viewed from above. We will discuss
perspective, sighting to find angles, human proportions and gesture.

When people move you can piece together individuals from
multiple people in the crowd. I often track an individual adding detail
to the location where I placed them initially in the sketch. This is a
way to “Frankenstein” the scene together. If we were sketching a scene
in a movie, this would be the establishing shot. The goal is to utilize
the course material to finish one sketch in a two hour time frame.

SUPPLIES:

A sketchbook of your choice, HB pencil, Micron pen or fountain pen
with waterproof ink, Pentel waterbrush, travel watercolor palette, brown
and black colored pencils, a rag and small water supply. A camping stool
is a great addition but not 100% necessary.

Thomas Thorspecken is a correspondent for the Urban Sketchers organization
since 2009 and has been an official Urban Sketching instructor for two
years. An illustrator and journalist he is working in and around Central
Florida and has been documenting arts and entertainment for eight years
in one sketch a day for his online news site, Analog Artist Digital World.
Thorspecken was an animation artist for Disney for 10 years and has
taught courses at Full Sail University and Elite Animation Academy. USk Correspondent.
