true of many bloggers, urban sketchers, photographers, and more. In this
engaging exhibition, created at the History Center, learn how
individuals who are absorbed in documenting the world of today
accidentally become some of Central Florida’s finest historians for the
future. Catch a glimpse into some of our favorite collections that were
created for the now – more than 100 years ago.

The Accidental Historian features both historic and
contemporary work and collections, including drawings by the renowned
artist and teacher Ralph Bagley and Urban Sketchers Orlando, poetry by
Orlando’s inaugural poet laureate Susan Lilley, audiovisual work by food
blogger Ricky Ly, historic images by photographer T.P. Robinson, and
more. Also on display is a tower of my sketchbooks from documenting Orlando Arts and Culture over the last 8 years.

us as we enjoy an afternoon of electric Jazz music, tasty food, craft
cocktails, and shopping in a beautiful, serene setting all while helping
to benefit Mead Botanical Garden.

Bobby Koelble Presents Jazz in
the garden, is a series of Jazz concerts that will be hosted by Mead
Botanical Garden. The shows, that will fall on the last Sunday of the
month from September thru November, will consist of world class
musicians performing a collection of your favorite Jazz standards with a
twist. 

There will be food and beverages available for purchase,
a shopping area curated by Suzette’s One Of A Kind Finds, as well as a
limited number of VIP passes which will include a brunch buffet catered
by Bites and Bubbles, beer or cocktail and a VIP viewing area.

7:30pm to 9:30pm $10-$20 suggested donation. Please also bring food or wine to share.  CF2’s 7th Annual Composer DIY Salon Concert.  Timucua 2000 S Summerlin Ave, Orlando, Florida 32806. For
seven years, Central Florida Composers Forum (CF2) has been offering
its members a first-come, first-on, get-er-done yerself opportunity to
present work to the Orlando/Central Florida public. The composers
themselves perform or arrange for the performers. That always means a
wider variety of sonic possibilities than a more typical, curated CF2
concert featuring a unified instrumentation.

This program
features Rebekah Todia’s Crossing The Bar, for piano and voice; Melody
Cook’s For Two Voices, No. 2, for clarinet and piano; Holly Cordero’s
Personified Bliss, for string quartet, Bob Jr.’s Conjure the Storm, for
piano, guitar, bass, and drums; Paul Austin Sanders’ electronic
compositions Danze Africanne, Spirit of the East, and Bop Latinesque;
and premieres of Alex Burtzos’ X Codes, for violin, clarinet, and piano,
and also his Perforation, for solo piano.

All ears are welcome.

11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Free. Fashion, Food and Architecture – Urban Sketching On Location. The Mall at Millenia 4200 Conroy Rd, Orlando, Florida 32839. This is the Orlando Urban Sketchers June sketch-out gathering. We Sketch on location, from observation, capturing time and places into our sketchbooks.

 In this session our goal is to combine small stories of trendy
fashion as showcased at the store fronts and by the shoppers passing by, to
capture the colorful food vendors and activity, all in the
context of the modern architectural design of the Mall at the Millenia
as a background.

This is a great place to go vignettes sketching, focusing on small composed scenes!

It is an indoor sketch out as we try to avoid the Florida summer’s high temperatures.

Location: Main Everest Campus, 600 St Andrews Blvd, Winter Park, FL 32792

Duration: 6 Weeks

Learn
to sketch from subject to the environment. Classroom sessions will
focus on sketching clothed models and progress towards sketching the
model and classroom environment. Learn how to incorporate storytelling
into your sketches in our location sessions. These trips to local venues
will challenge you to use your sketchbook the way a photojournalist
uses a camera. The six-week goal is to produce finished sketches using
pencil, pen, and watercolor within two hours. Skill level: Intermediate.

Howl at the Moon Fundraiser.

Howl at the Moon raised money for In Harmony Nature Animal Haven. Patrons were invited to dress up their dogs for Yappy Hour at Orlando Brewing, (1301 Atlanta Ave, Orlando, FL 32806). Nature Animal Haven is a sanctuary for wolves, wolf dogs, dogs, cats, parrots, reptiles and pigs. They work to find forever homes for animals ready for adoption.

There were folks at the door to explain the event and accept $10 donations. The donation allowed for money off of draft beers. Pam Schwartz brought Sprout her gentleman of a mutt, He wore a green polka dot bow tie for the occasion. His hair was spiked up into a Mohawk for as long as it lasted. There were plenty of dogs in the house, and my favorite costume was the German Shepard in the foreground dressed in a yellow rain jacket with a red balloon. This is of course reminiscent of the beginning of the Stephen King movie, It, where a little boy chases a paper sail boat down a drain, only to have his arm ripped off by a demonic clown. The dog had all his limbs. Another smaller pooch won the costume contest wearing an inflatable power pack from Ghost Busters. His owner had on a similar power pack. They spent all their time at the bar and I didn’t notice them until the end.

There were wolf dogs and dogs everywhere. Sprout had a great time sniffing and meeting all the dogs, though none of them were particularly interested in playing. Dogs in Orlando are so well behaved. There was a silent auction and none of the items had bids yet, so Pam put starting bids on several items. She didn’t end up winning anything. She ordered us a beer sampler with 5 different beers. I liked the German Blonde beer the best.

Once the  sketch was done, we went outside to try Mighty Weenie which was vending Seattle-style hot dogs. What is different about these dogs is that they have thick cream cheese spread inside the buns along with onions. It was a rather bland tasting hot dog to be honest. It needed something other than white bread and cream cheese for flavor so I mounded on the sauerkraut.

The Orlando Brewing One Pulse Sounds of Our City concert.

All day, acts got on the outdoor stage at Orlando Brewing (1301 Atlanta Ave, Orlando, Florida) for the One Pulse Sounds of Our City benefit concert. It was x relaxing afternoon of sipping beer and enjoying music.  I believe this is a sketch of Aaron Fox Marshall. His soothing acoustic vocals eased me into the event. This is a fine example o the grass roots fundraising that rose from the ashes of the Pulse Tragedy. Artists of all kinds rose to the challenge of placing love above hate. It is a quiet well spring that gradually gathers strength to become a raging river. 

Rain threatened and rumbled on the horizon but for the four performances I saw, nature withheld it’s wrath. [ would bet there were misty rainbows rather than torrential rain.

One Pulse Sounds of Our City

On Sunday, I went to One Pulse Sounds of Our City at Orlando Brewing (1301 Atlanta Ave, Orlando, Florida). The concert promised stellar local musicians with the proceeds to benefit the victims of the Pulse Nightclub tragedy. This musical event was hosted by Shadow Pearson and featured some of Orlando’s best musicians, writers and artists. It was exceedingly hot. The One Pulse Logo above the stage consisted of Mylar balloons. A large
tent was set up in front of Orlando Brewing, and an ice cream truck
offered cold refreshments.

The highlight of the afternoon’s performances was the Orlando Gay Chorus. They have been been performing non-stop at benefit after benefit. The chorus perform in two parts, the all male chorus and then the mixed gender chorus. Both sang uplifting songs that had the audience singing along. The Orlando Gay Chorus is the face of love, and they are the voice of hope. Don’t be afraid of the dark.
