Michael A. Mennello died from COVID-19

Michael A. Mennello who co-foundered  the Loch Haven Park art museum that bears his name, died December 18, 2020  after a brief COVID-19 related illness. He was 87.

I once had the honor to sketch Michael in his home, Casa Bianca. I was working on a mural for the Mennello Museum of American Art and sketched people from life to be added to the wall. Michael wanted to be included in the mural  so he invited me to sketch him at home.

The visit was thrilling. He has such an amazing collection of Ash Can era paintings that were right in line with my love of art being used to capture everyday life.

In Orlando, Michael and his wife Marilyn whom he met in Winter Park, established the Mennello Museum in 1998 after donating 35 paintings by folk artist Earl Cunningham to the city. Marilyn died in 2006 leaving him bereft. A gold statue of her is in the Mennello Museum collection.

As I did this sketch Michael told me about a lavish holiday party that is hosed in his home each year. He suggested I should go to the event to do a sketch. There is a balcony overlooking the room where I could sit to look down and sketch the lavish spread. Unfortunately I never did that sketch. This year’s party was canceled due to COVID-19. Life is short but art endures. I was honored to have me Michael and to have seen his amazing art collection first hand. In 2018 Michael donated additional paintings and sculptures, valued at $8.75 million, to the Mennello Museum of Art.

The Mennello Museum of American Art is slated for a 20 million dollar a 40,000 square-foot expansion by architects Brooks + Scarpa & KMF. Michael Mennello said in 2019, My late wife, Marilyn, and I opened the museum in November 1998. We were avid art collectors who had a dream to create an intimate cultural gem. Never in a million years did I dream I would be alive to see our museum become a global destination for world-class American Art for all to enjoy.” I am sure construction was delayed due to COVID-19 and unfortunately Michael didn’t live to see it open. Ars longa, vita brevis. His legacy of sharing art will outlive us all.

In the
American heartland during the Great Depression, the provincial existence
of a rural farming family hinges upon the high school graduation of the
eldest daughter, Laurie Moss. However, on the eve of her graduation,
Laurie finds herself questioning her place in the world and wondering
what kind of life she could lead if she were to leave the farm. Her
restlessness is fueled by two drifters, Top and Martin, who are hired to
help with the harvest.

While Ma and Grandpa Moss are suspicious
of the strangers, Laurie is captivated by their vivid tales of travel,
and she and Martin quickly fall in love, culminating in a tender kiss at
Laurie’s graduation party. Grandpa Moss, furious, banishes the two men,
leading Martin and Laurie to make plans to elope, but Martin quickly
realizes that this would cause trouble for all involved, and reluctantly
sneaks away before daybreak. Heartbroken, Laurie realizes that, though
now alone, it is still time for her to go. She bids farewell to the farm
and sets off into the unknown, leaving her weeping family to completely
reassess their hopes, dreams, and plans for the future.

A vivid
portrait of the rural mid-west, The Tender Land is painted richly with
Copland’s quintessentially American harmonies and tells a beautiful and
simple story of a young woman’s coming of age.

Sung in English with super titles.

The second Sunday of each month is Free Family Day at the Mennello Museum of American Art, (900 East Princeton Street, Orlando, FL 32803). This was a rare day when it was cool enough to sketch outside. A wedding rehearsal was set up lakeside and people slowly gathered to run through the ceremony.

entitled Park Avenue Paper Chase. Aycock, is one
of America’s most recognized and respected sculptors of her generation.

year-long large-scale sculpture exhibitions by nationally renowned
American artists who otherwise would not be shared with Orlando
audiences. It is possible to see the sculptures any time if you are running or riding the Orlando Urban Trail which runs from Meade Gardens to the north down through Lock Haven park, Lake Formosa and down to Magnolia Avenue. An extension is planned to bring the running and biking trail downtown.

Museum Founder Michael Mennello presented over 20 examples of early 20th
Century painting and seminal works from his American Impressionist
Collection to the museum on May 1, 2018.  These painting are is
valued at more than $8.75 million as appraised by Debra Force Fine Art,
LLC, New York. The masterpieces include work by renowned ashcan school artists: John Sloan, Robert Henri, George Lukes, and George Bellows. The ashcan school was named after a sketch done by George Bellows of two bums inspecting a morsel of food they had just lifted from a garbage can. The movement didn’t only show life in the gutters, but also featured the pleasures of art and culture that was booming at the time. The ashcan school of art includes some of my favorite artists who documented everyday life of people from all walks of life.

The next Free Family Fun Day at the Mennello is October 14, 2018 from Noon to 2:30pm. I definitely want to see these new paintings in person.
