In the musical, From My Hometown, three young R&B singers met up in NYC in 1980, having arrived there from Detroit, Memphis and Philadelphia. They each had superb voices and definite talent and were heading for a competitive audition to nurture their dream of performing at the famed Apollo Theater.
The show was created by playwright Lee Summers, based on a book written by Summers, Ty Stephens, and Herbert Rawlings, Jr., built around their personal autobiographical stories of desiring careers in the music and theater industry. The musical was full of classic soul and R&B songs performed by three enormously talented actors, Adourin Jamelle Owens, Quentin Avery Brown and James White III.
This talented artist had one thing in common, they were all broke and desperately needed to win the Apollo Theater audition. This rags to riches tale and quite a few unexpected twists and turns.
The Winter Park Playhouse production was performed in the Mandell Theater at the Orlando Shakes Theater Complex (812 East Rollins Street Orlando FL 32803) while The Playhouse’s Winter Park location was under renovation.
