model and classroom environment. Learn how to incorporate storytelling

will challenge you to use your sketchbook the way a photojournalist

treasures in the museum’s hidden corners. From gargantuan gators to
magical mermaids, we got just the right amazing object to bring a true
touch of Florida and fabulous fun to your home or office!

We’re
talking about everything from massive manatees to a compact King
Kong—even the pretend claw of a giant sloth, and it’s pretty scary. In
short, a plethora of one-of-a-kind treasures, ranging in size from 6
inches to more than 6 feet, that spell out the wild, wacky, and
wonderful state we’re in.
The Fabulous Floridiana live auction,
will be led by a professional auctioneer. Proceeds benefit History Center
programs. The museum will offer free admission, and you can examine our
treasures starting at 10 a.m

Please note
that most of these props or models go back to the museum’s opening
almost 20 years ago; they must be sold “as is,” so you’ll want to check
them out before bidding.

Florida Film Festival Opening Night Party

The opening night of the 2019 Florida Film Festival was celebrated with a
thrilling film premiere at Enzian Theater (1300 Orlando Ave, Maitland, FL 32751). The opening night film was Woman in Motion directed by Todd Thompson. To most of the known universe, Nichelle Nichols is Lieutenant Uhura, the
communications officer aboard the Starship Enterprise. On Star Trek
she broke barriers as one of the first African Americans to star in a
network show and as a participant in television’s first interracial
kiss. In reality Nichelle Nichols was a pioneer, a fiercely intelligent
and passionate advocate for African Americans, women, and minorities.
She worked with the NAACP and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as a role model
for young black children and women. Beyond that, Nichelle Nichols is
arguably the single most important figure in history for the recruitment
of women and minorities to the field of space exploration, specifically
the NASA space shuttle program.

After the premiere, patrons sampled food and cocktails from favorite
local spots and an open bar at Eden Bar. It was an outdoor feast where patrons could
mingle and celebrate with all the folks would be their new cinematic best
friends for the next ten days. Patrons ate, drank, were merry, and discussed all the
films that might be seen at the festival ahead. This legendary
party launched a non-stop, fun-filled, ten-day celebration of Film,
Food, and Friends.

When Pam and I arrived, I quickly sat in a open spot to sketch the moon shaped orb that illuminated the lawn next to the Eden Bar. Pam explored a bit and sat with Scottie and Brendan to catch up. When My sketch was done, Scottie asked if I had included him in the sketch. Unfortunately he was out of my line of sight.

Pam and I tried a few vendors food booths to see what was available at this gala opening party. First up we tried a slice of pizza from Medici Pizza. It was kind of hard to judge the pizza since it was ice cold. We picked up a flyer anyway and might go to the restaurant to try a hot slice instead. Roque Pub was offering bites, beer and wine. Better yet they had a $10 off coupon and a bumper sticker. Now I don’t put stickers on my bumper,but I did place it on the cover of my sketchbook which is mighty fine ad placement for hundreds of years to come. Should you be a local business wanting sticker exposure look no further than the AADW sketchbooks. The other food treat I tried was from La Empanada and that was delicious. After a couple of bites of cheese I had seen enough. I had my sketch and the party was in full swing. We decided to get back home since I had to get up early to teach all day Saturday.

Today is the final day of the Florida Film Festival, so get out and support independent cinema.

Bring your camera, because the stunning campus comes ALIVE after dark for the 8th annual Night of Fire! Enjoy free live music, refreshments, adult beverages, and storytelling around the fire (my cozy favorite), and tour the opening exhibition HAND IN HAND: THE CREATIVE WORKS OF JANVIER MILLER AND GUSTAF MILLER.

It’s fun and free to participate in all of the art workshops and demonstrations; including a torch cut metal demonstration, a gas kiln firing, raku firing and a light painting photography display over Lake Sterling. There will be painting demonstrations in the studios, too. Hands-on youth workshops from 5–6:30 p.m. Live music and workshops for adults until 8 p.m.

The evening also serves as the opening reception for the “Director’s Choice V” exhibition of works by Crealde’s youth faculty.

The Front Office will be open to register for classes. All activities are free.

The Global Peace Film Festival Opening Night Party

On September 18, 2018 the Global Peace Film Festival opened here in Orlando. On that evening there was a screening of the film, “Every Act of Life” which profiles the world renowned playwright, Terrance McNally‘s pioneering five decade career in theater focusing on the struggle for LGBT rights and his pursuit of love and inspiration at every age. The festival is in its 16th year. In these times of deep division, the festival focuses on our resources which are just an arm’s length away in our family, neighbors, friends and throughout our communities. All week films are being shown in venues at Rollins College, The Winter Park Public Library, The Center, Valencia College, and Downtown Orlando.

Pam Schwartz and I got a table with a view at the Enzian Theater on opening night. The film had not let out yet, so the Eden Bar was half full. Then the theater doors opened and the festival goers filled the bar. There were light bites and the room was suddenly a buzz with activity. At a table in front of us, photographer Peter Morey was having a discussion with Jim Lussier. Peter spent ten years shooting photos of Nelson Mandela and an exhibit of these photos is opening on tonight, September 20, 2018 at City Arts Factory. 2018 marks the 100 year anniversary of the birth of Nelson Mandela. Photos in the exhibit feature Mandela’s inauguration, meetings with dignitaries, and even shots of Nelson at home with his family.

I intend to get to a screening of “Uprising: Pulse to Parkland”  by local film maker Vicki Nantz. The film is about two Florida communities united by grief and anger from deadly mass shootings. It is about the national uprising against the gun industry and the politicians who profit from gun violence in America. That screening is on Friday September 21, 2018 at 6pm in the Bush Auditorium at Rollins College.

Orlando Urban Sketchers is sketching the Saturday Matinee Classics at the Enzian, and we will be
there to capture in sketches a time, an era and a space. Surrounded by
weeping oaks, a bubbling fountain, and a beautiful courtyard, Enzian is a
unique cinema-going experience, a dine-in theater packed with old-time
charm we wish to document into our sketchbooks.
We plan on sketching in the Eden-Bar garden outside the theater at 10:30 am first.

At 12:00 pm the 1950’s film Born Yesterday will be featured inside the
theater. We plan on moving indoors as soon as doors open to sketch the
theater interior where we can also grab lunch bites and watch the movie.

At 2:00pm we’ll meet back at Eden Bar garden for our traditional Sketchbooks-throw down ceremony.

Watching the film is not mandatory. Sketching can be kept going
outdoors to capture the moviegoers, the Eden Bar crowd, and Enzian’s
garden views.
There’s an $8.00 general admission for those who
wish to watch the film. Tickets can be purchased at the box-office or

This annual free event serves as a gift from the Museum’s
City-Appointed Board of Trustees in an effort to promote local art and
community. A portion of all proceeds benefit the Mennello Museum of
American Art’s education and family-friendly programs.

1 PM to 3 PM Free. Hidden Medicine Class with John Two-Hawks. Christ Church Unity Orlando 771 W Holden Ave, Orlando, Florida 32839. Grammy® nominated recording artist and author John Two-Hawks is a
victim and a survivor of child abuse. It has taken him 30 years to
arrive at the place in his life where he could finally tell his story.
His new book and CD is a revealing window into the inner sanctum of
John’s very personal life journey from severe child abuse to victorious
triumph, and how the sacred ways of indigenous wisdom revealed a
profound truth hidden within. John wrote the book and music with the
hope that it would help others to bravely blaze a path through their
heart to find their own Hidden Medicine. In this class/workshop, John
Two-Hawks will share his inspirational insights about how to be fully
liberated from hurt and empowered by what we find within. There are
three phases of that journey, and the third is often not realized. John
will share the pathway of all three, with an emphasis on how to take
that final step. An enlightening and uplifting experience for all.

1 PM to 4 PM $5 Film Slam. Enzian Theater, South Orlando Avenue, Maitland, FL. Film Slam continues to be a popular outlet for indie and student filmmakers throughout the State of Florida.
Film Slam will usually be held on the second Sunday of each month at 1PM at Enzian.
This month we’ve booked the craziest Film Slam line up of the year.
Experimental
Films, Puppet Films, Art Films, Bartenders throwing bottles, Gangsters,
a Music Video….this has to be the most amazingly eclectic line we’ve
had for all of 2012.
Program starts at 1pm sharp.  Q and A with the filmmakers to follow screening.

every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., on the east side of the Orlando

Noon to 4 PM.  Free.  Winter Music Series.  Lakeridge Winery and Vineyards 19239 US 27 North, Clermont, Florida 34715.  Each Saturday afternoon during the month of January, Lakeridge Winery
holds its famous Music Series, featuring live music on the outdoor
stage, and inside at our Wine & Cheese Bar upstairs in the winery.
The musicians selected are all fantastic performers, hand-picked from
the wealth of talent located throughout Central Florida. Lakeridge wine,
beer, soft drinks and a variety of food is available for purchase,
along with complimentary Winery tours and tasting.

 Noon to 1 PM.  Donation based.  Yoga.  Lake Eola at the field near the red gazebo. 

1 PM to 5:30 PM Free.  Family Day on the Second Sunday.  The Mennello Museum of American Art (900 East Princeton Street, Orlando, FL 32803).  The make-and-take craft table is open from noon-2:30 p.m., and docents
are available to give mini-tours of the museum. Then it’s open house in
the galleries until 4:30 p.m.

2 PM to 5 PM $5. Film Slam.   Enzian Theater (1300 S Orlando Ave, Maitland, FL 32751).  Originally a project of University of Central Florida’s Downtown Media
Arts Center, Enzian became the home of FilmSlam when DMAC closed in
2006. Now in its fifth year at Enzian, FilmSlam continues to be a
popular outlet for indie and student filmmakers throughout the State of
Florida.

FilmSlam will usually be held on the second Sunday of each month at 1PM at Enzian.
