Team Slam at Milk Bar

The Orlando Poetry Team Slam was hosted at The Milk Bar Lounge (2424 E Robinson St, Orlando, Florida 32803.) Joe XO acted as the MC for the evening. Sign up started at 8 pm, and the Slam started at 9 pm.

There were two rounds with 3 minute poems, involving no props or costumes.
Round One had 12 teams, with the top five moving on.
Round Two had 5 teams, with the best poem winning. The winner received $50 and bragging rights. Solo pieces were not allowed. Every poem had to be a group piece. There had to be 2-3 people per team.

The Featured Poet for the evening was Jay Salazar. Salazar is a spoken word poet out of New Jersey and New York City. He writes about food, addiction, alcohol, and family. When he is not writing he is probably cooking, working out, eating, or binging some netflix show that isn’t that good. It was Jay that I decided to sketch behind the microphone. I loved that there was a simple smiley face poster on the far wall that said, “Be a good human.” I also loved that the Milk Bar’s dog was curled up on stage with the performers.

Breaking Bad Poetry

This Breaking Bad Poetry Show was held in Troy Cunio’s house which is an old bungalow.

There were performances from Breaking
Bad Poets, Joy Stokes, Nathaniel C. Bek, Mata Dor, Leigh Fields, and Troy
Cunio
. Jazz guitarist Syoma Klochko accompanied many poets, adding to the hip vibe.

The event will preceded by a flash tattoo
session by Bruce Lea. I decided to start my sketch of the tattoo session. Sine I started my sketch in the living room, I stayed there while the poets read in the dining room. Thankfully I could see the poets but I couldn’t see the crowd listening. There was no cover, but authors had books, buttons, and
other fun stuff for sale.

Spilled Milk Open Mic

The Milk Bar Lounge (2424 E Robinson St, Orlando, Florida 32803) supports local poets by hosting a monthly poetry night.  The poetry started around started around 9pm. That is when the poetry and drinks started flowing. The signup slot time length was around 5 minutes or 2 poems, whichever came first. This might change depending on how many poets show up.

I started sketching before the first poet took to the stage. They arrive notoriously late and usually sit and start writing when they arrive. The Milk Bar’s public relations puppy wanders from table to table welcoming each poet. It gradually grew dark outside making the warm glow inside all the more inviting. After a few drinks every poem seems inspired and meaningful. An impartial member of the audience is invited to judge, and each poet in turn weighs in for the bragging rights to become the top poet for the night.

The next poetry event is the Orlando Poetry Team Slam with Jay Salazar. This will be on July 5th, 2018. Each poet must buy a drink/support the venue to sign up! Sign Up at 8pm, and the slam starts at 9p.m.

Two rounds! 3minute poems, no props or costumes.

Round One, 12 teams, top five move on!

Round Two, 5 teams, Best poem wins!

Winner gets $50 and major bragging rights!

Here’s the catch. Solo pieces are not allowed. Every poem must be a group piece. You can have 2 to 3 people per team.
