Nude Nite Orlando

Celebrating its 15th year, Nude Nite is a body-themed immersive
pop-up art experience. This talked-about art party, is held in a
20,000 warehouse with over 200 of the best nude artworks for sale
from artists around the country. The event features burlesque stage shows, world
class body painting, interactive installations, performance artists,
acrobats, stilt walkers, aerialists and a cast of painted characters
creating a stunning canvas for Insta-worthy photos. Nude Nite is a
multi-sensory art encounter that leaves you feeling hot with what
you’ve got.

Nude Nite has 3 full cocktail bars, gourmet food for
purchase and DJ music to ignite the vibe. Nude Nite is created with
conscious intention. It is female owned and operated, maintains a gender
equal model ratio meaning for every female there is a male. Nude Nite
models are all sizes, colors and genders. The event utilizes sustainable
products wherever possible.

For me the evening is always an inspiring and awesome sketching opportunity. Immediately when I entered I was attracted to this  antique tub with a woman in it. The tableau was set up by body painter Nix Herrera. He said he had essentially used everything from his outdoor patio to set up the scene. The woman sat submerged in water at first in which floated ferns and flowers. When she stood, she would entice people to come closer like a siren. On her belly and legs were written phrases. I didn’t lean in to read them all and the only ones I put in the sketch was the surprising phrase, “You slut.” On her head was a miniature model of the greenhouse enclosure they were in. Behind her stood a stoic and still couple in masks. On the woman’s head was a crown which looked like a model of a cathedral spire wrapped in fabric. When people were not around I heard her giggle occasionally and touch her hand to her lips which never moved. Later when she looked over my shoulder at the sketch, she spoke and I finally realized that her lips were part of the mask. When posing she tended to curl her toes, which made me wonder if she was uncomfortable or cold. There was a space heater beside her. I also wondered about the temperature of the water in the tub. It is strange what you think about while you sketch.

While sketching, I was joined by local artist Erin Colleen who also had a sketchbook. I am very familiar with Erin’s work because of Facebook and was happy to meet her in person. Strange but because of social media I already thought I knew her, or at least her art. I am an antisocial machine when sketching but I did ask her a few questions. She used to work at Madam Tossauds wax museum painting the skin tones for the figures. She hopes to work with animatronics next which would be a pretty sweet gig. I bumped into her a second time while I was considering sketching Mandi Ilene Schiff who was body painting a golden man with a buddha on his chest.

In the center of the room was a peace and tranquility zone with a woman posed in a cross legged pose with a radiating golden crown. From a distance Erin noticed a photo in the exhibit of a woman covered in honey. She said that the photo was of the woman in the golden crown. I looked back and forth and the resemblance was amazing. I am a doubting Thomas however, so I had to walk up to the model and ask if it was indeed her. It was. Of course an artist who could paint wax figures of celebrities, making them come alive, could pick out a portrait from a distance. Erin is also a portrait painter. I was amazed and tickled. The photo as it turns out was by Mandi who had shot her model from a past body painting session. Photos are the only way to immortalize the art she creates.

I never did do a second sketch, I was satisfied with this one. Of all the art on display, I was most impressed by a painted drawing done by artist Broni Likomanov from Studio City California. Titled Nude 4 it had bold charcoal strokes and acrylic paint that created a vibrant Egon Schiele inspired pose. Everything about the piece was inspiring. If I had $500 in my pocket I would have walked out with it. This was a fun night full of surprises.

Tonight February 15, 2020 is the last evening for Nude Nite.

Admission is $35 and tickets can be purchased at the door. The event will not sell out.

Nude Nite 2019

Nude Nite Orlando was held at the Central Florida Fairgrounds on February 14-16. Pam Schwartz and I went on Valentines day, the opening night. I wanted to go nice and early to sketch before the place got really crowded. A ticket at the door is $35 and I didn’t have that much cash on hand. We had to get cash from a cash machine in the parking lot. Note that the bar a Nude Nite also only accepts cash. I didn’t get a drink since I was sketching the whole time I was there.

Nude Nite feels so much smaller than past years. It was at the fairgrounds last year as well, but I didn’t sketch because I got the dates wrong. My feeling walking around the event was that the event had grown smaller in scale. I have to say however that artists were just setting up for the night. I quickly decided to sketch Mandi Ilene Schiff as she was body painting. She was set up right in the middle of the warehouse which offered easy sketching access. She was painting a tiger face on they model’s chest. The color she added was a greenish glitter paint.

An art installation by Aubry Roemer consisted of a long roll of white paper on the floor. He painted nude models with blue paint and had them lie on the white paper to create body prints. He then also outlined the prints with large blue brush strokes. He also wore a mask although I am not sure why. A coffin with a plastic skeleton was set up. The premise was that guests could write notes on pages from a book and then put them in the coffin.  The notes would be burned after Nude Nite. I suppose that burning negative thoughts could be a form of therapy.

As we were getting ready to leave, one performer, Sarah Jade, languidly hung from the ceiling with an aerial sling. She did splits and spun. When her routine was finished she gracefully floated down to the floor as if weightless. Performances were just beginning.

My favorite art was simple nude sketches on some form of Mylar. They were on sale for only $150. On the far wall behind Mandi was a huge photo mosaic for about $5000. A woman arched her back as if the Pieta. Another similar mosaic had lots of Bambi fawns. I lost interest since performances didn’t get under way until after 9pm. We decided to go out for dinner to finish off the Valentines evening. We went to Phò Vinh (657 N Primrose Drive Orlando Fl 32803) and I had Bún Càri Gà which is a delicious soup with rice vermicelli with chicken in a coconut curry broth. It was sooooo good, the highlight of the evening.

hosting the 3rd Annual Windermere Art Affair in Town Square, Downtown
Windermere. This wonderful event will be open to the public, targeting
residents of Orlando and surrounding cities, towns and suburbs. This
provides a unique opportunity to reach out to attendees from all walks
of life, especially the affluent segment of Central Florida.
 This
elite event will showcase renowned fine art artists, including the
Highwaymen, Alana O’Hern and Father Valdemar—just to name a
few—surrounded by music, food and performing arts in a festive
atmosphere. 

This is a judged event, and the judging will begin at 11:30am and be
completed by 2pm. At 2pm we will announce, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Best of Show,
and three Honorable Mentions.

3PM to 5 PM Free. Workshop on Sexual Harassment and Abuse. Orlando Shakespeare Theater at the Lowndes Shakespeare Center. Laura T. Fisher, a founder of the Chicago
Theatre Standards #NotInOurHouse, will give a presentation on preventing
sexual harassment and abuse to the Orlando arts community.

Orlando Shakespeare Theater in Partnership with UCF, Theatre UCF,
Mad Cow Theatre, and Orlando Repertory Theatre (Theatres) will present
two sessions of a workshop with Ms. Laura T. Fisher, a founder of the
Chicago Theatre Standards (CTS). Workshops will be held at Loch Haven
Park on Friday, March 2,2018 and at the University of Central Florida
campus on Saturday, March 3, 2018.

In
January 2015, a Chicago actor,after hearing an account of repeated
incidents of sexual harassment at a theatre company, made a Facebook post
that decried such acts with the rallying cry, “NOT IN OUR HOUSE.”
Hundreds of responses revealed that the problem was well-known, but no
one felt safe enough to speak out. By March 2015, a code of conduct was
underway. Co-ordinated by Chicago actor Laura T. Fisher, a small group of
theatre companies and artists created the CTS.

 In
an effort to find solutions and guidelines for prevention, the Theatres
invited Ms. Fisher to present a workshop on the CTS, which have been
adopted by numerous theaters across the nation, and to address potential
issues in the theatre community.

All
members of the Central Florida arts community are invited to attend
either of the free sessions. Ms. Fisher will go through the document
contents, take questions and offer feedback, all with an eye toward
uniting rather than dividing productions, theatres, and communities.
The presentation is designed to speak to members of the theatre community
including union and non-union actors, designers, directors,theatre
teachers and professors, students, technicians, staff,
administrators,board members, and anyone connected to the theatre
community. However, the Standards are adaptable for similar disciplines
including dance, music, opera, and film.

In presenting
the work of #NotInOurHouse and the resultant CTS, Fisher conveys
the priorities of the document: to provide communication pathways to
prevent and respond to unsafe practices and inappropriate behavior, to
produce a win-win strategy for producers, performers, board members, and
audience, to enter into self-regulation in a spirit of mentoring rather
than “outing,” to “call in”rather than “call out,” and to strengthen
environments where employees are not discarded for mistakes or
misunderstandings, nor do they fear reprisal for reporting harassment or
abuse.

“Like
the rest of the nation,Central Florida’s theatre community has been
grappling with the truth that people of all genders have experienced
trauma and pain from sexual harassment,abuse, and intimidation,” states
UCF’s Cynthia White, director of Boy Gets Girl.

 “While
this is not solely a women’sissue, women have been disproportionately
hurt physically, emotionally, and financially.” Mitzi Maxwell, executive
director of Mad Cow Theater, adds. “Everyoneis asking how to change our
culture, and everyday there is a new story. We can start with our own
houses, in our community, and these workshop sessions are a beginning. We
encourage artists and administrators to join the conversation.All are
welcome.”

Nude Nite Orlando.

Nude Nite Orlando is at the Central Florida Fairgrounds & Expositions Park (4603 W Colonial Dr, Orlando, Florida) this year. It was scheduled to happen at Artegon but Artegon closed it’s doors for good. Nude
Nite is a dazzling pop up gallery, an art and entertainment event
celebrating the beauty of the nude. It brings together hundreds
of artists for three evenings of visual art, performance and a cast of
characters both in costume and out. Open to the public, tickets can
be purchased at the door. Show is 21+

I walked the event quickly and settled in to sketch the incomparable Nix Herrera who was doing exotic Art Nouveau body paintings, The woman was painted all black with golden stenciled patterns on her belly thighs and forearm. A heavy set man was being painted all bronze. They both had black fabric helmets. The woman had a thin face guard similar to a football he met and the bronze man had aviation goggles. The woman held an illuminated globe. Futuristic golden triangular forms were mounted around her nipples. She wore an expressions white mask giving her a statuesque flair. 

Selfismo had a painting with a man with an enormous penis. The penis looks like it is sticking out of a woman’s head in me sketch. A little for the back in the scene there was a confession area. Fire curtained booths allowed for the most sordid confessions. One confession read, “I an tucking my fiance’s best friend.” Another, promoting the confessional said, ” I showed my mom’s deck picks to my class.”

A common theme in the visual art displayed was of nude women under water. There must have been at leas ten photos and paintings of the aquatic setting. A very ugly mermaid was at another body painting station. A nude woman on stilts wandered through the crowd waving sinewy rainbow scarves. 

Tonight starting at 6pm is the last night to experience 25,000 SF of Nude Art and Entertainment.

Golden Body Painting at Nude Nite.

If you missed Nude Nite here in Orlando this Valentines Day, keep in mind that it will also be happening on March 3-5 in Tampa Florida. The sketch opportunities are clearly limitless. On my second night going to the venue, I decided to focus on Base Orlando body painters. I know Lori Babson Jessup, the body painter in the foreground from sketching dancers in town. Spiraling filigree were painted in Lori’s cleavage making it hard not to look there. Base Orlando is a group of Body painters who gather regularly and paint their models with a given theme. A recent Base Orlando event had a steampunk theme. It was clear the steampunk inspired Lori’s body painting on this Nude Nite. The model had golden chain mail on her shoulders and breasts and gears interconnected on her  legs.

Lori had an assistant to help with the work. Photographers would move in for their shots and the disperse like waves crashing against the shore. Some couples were concerned about the paint, perhaps because of the scene in Goldfinger in which a gorgeous woman died because she was painted head to toe in gold paint. Lori would reassure people that the paint water based theater paint that. completely non-toxic. Lori would at times stand on the platform with the model and other times she stood below on the floor. One time she was on the platform and so focused on her painting, that g almost tumbled off the platform. She laughed and then curtsied to the assembled crowd. “Thanks folks, I’ll be here all night.” As if the slip was all part of the act.

With my sketch done, to was tempted to try another, but I was exhausted. t had been teaching an Urban sketching Workshop all day with Kelly Medford at the Mennello Museum. We had 14 students and it was such a gorgeous day. Nudc Nite was the icing on the cake of a perfect day.

Nude Nite swept in to Artegon, (5250 International Dr, Orlando, FL) on February 11th to 13th. Nude
Nite is a dazzling art and entertainment event celebrating the beauty
of the nude. The show brings together hundreds of artists for three
evenings of visual art, performance and a cast of characters both in
costume and out. Show was 21+.

I parked near the Cinemark Theater but when I walked inside, a guard was closing up the mall. H turns out that Nude Nite is on the opposite end of the mall, and I had to walk around on the outside to get there. One small sign on the mall lawn pointed towards “The Art Show”. There was a line near the Nude Nite entrance. I was surprised that the woman at the ticket table knew my name and ushered me in. I was given a NN hand stamp. Why was a hand stamp needed? Perhaps some couples might go out to their car for a quickly, and then return inside for more entertainment.

Art was everywhere. Chairs and umbrellas hung from the high industrial ceilings. Some paintings had been sold. Bernie Martin had a red dot on a nude watercolor selling for $350. A burlesque dancer was performing on the main stage, and the crowd was so dense that I abandoned any notion of sketching any performance on stage. Instead, I explored the outer edges of the venue.

I focused on this sensual dancer who vogued and gyrated all evening.  Her sensual swimsuit was painted on along with her ruffled collar. No pasties hid her nipples. She was popular as a photo opportunity with couples posing near the cage, pursing their lips like Zoolander. A sign advised patrons to respect the performer, and Do Not Touch! That sign was common throughout the venue. The dancer took a break just as I was starting to apply color to the sketch. There is no door to the cage, so she had to squeeze through the bars. That in itself was a sensual act of liberation. I patiently painted the background until she returned.

I was standing near a sculpture that resembled a male phallus with spikes sticking out of it. I kept getting asked if I was the sculptor. A photo of nude women posing and intertwining formed the image of a human skill. A gaping open mouthed facade lead patrons in to a hall of mirrors. Several artists asked about my tablet which seems a liability, because no one ever asked what type of sketchbook I was using.

On Valentines Eve I went to Nude Nite to get a second sketch. I parked in the same place about a quarter mile up the road and walked to the warehouse venue. On this hike however I tried to jump over a roadside drainage ditch and missed. My right hiking boot sank into the muddy slop up past my ankle before I pulled it out with a slurp. I arrived at Nude Nite with one boot soaking wet and covered in mud. Nude Nite is a pretty swanky affair with women in high heals with sleek low cut dresses. My boot debacle made me feel like Frankenstein. I reassured myself that no one checks out a guys shoes. I tend to cross my legs when seated and drawing and that left the boot dangling out in front of me.

Enough about the slop. I decided to sketch Marla E. Artist who was doing a larger than life painting of a stunning nude model. Marla prepares her canvases with a thick gesso that makes the surface smooth as plaster. She also incorporates even thicker circular patterns that create a surface you are tempted to want to touch.  Marla actually used champagne to thin out her paints. The model had on a long pearl necklace that accentuated the curve of her back. Marla’s painting from the evening before was stored off to the left. When the model took a break, I sketched her one more time as she checked her phone for messages.

Orit Reuben had a pastel nude on display and it sold on the first night. I really should consider hanging work in next year’s show. Then again, the only time I sketch nudes is at Nude Nite. I checked out the couple that were allowing people to snip away one inch pieces of fabric from their outfits. I considered doing a second sketch. The scene was chaos and the crowd so thick that I decided to pass on the sketch opportunity one more time. I needed to get home and slip out of my sopping wet boot.

Nude Nite is a dazzling art and entertainment event celebrating the beauty of the nude. It brings together hundreds of artists for three evenings of visual art, performance and a cast of characters both in costume and out. Open to the public, tickets can be purchased at the door. This year the event took over an empty warehouse at 5051 LB McLeod Rd. Orlando FL. Tree trunks outside the venue gave a visual clue that you had arrived along with the line of cars waiting to park. Valet parking is $10 so I drove down the road a distance to find self parking.

Once inside, I quickly walked around searching for a subject to sketch. Since most performers were nude or partly nude, the choices were overwhelming. On a stage with butterfly wings as a backdrop, a figure squirmed inside a dark fabric cocoon. Later in the evening she was free of the cocoon and gracefully flapping her wings. There was a staging area for Marla E. Artist who began a life sized nude painting of a nude female model on one of her thick impasto canvases.

In the furthest reaches of the warehouse, I found these two men hard at work. A large ball of electric wiring sat between them. They were pealing away the plastic casings from wires to expose the inner copper wire. The copper wire was then cut into one foot lengths and stacked in a neat pile. A video camera taped the whole process and a black and white projection filled the back wall. As I sketched, I realized that the projection showed a different time. It didn’t sync with the live action performance. What does it all mean? Who knows. Art I guess. The crowds weren’t too dense on opening night, but I’m always amazed at how many people are shooting photos. You can tell the amateurs with their red laser beams and flashes. They should learn to sketch, it is far less disruptive.

After my sketch was done, I packed up to get right back home. As I left, there was a huge crowd with their cell phones raised to take photos of some unfolding action. Linda Saracino who was with her friend Lillian Verkins explained that there was a clothed couple standing on display in front of the mob. People standing in line were given a chance to take a pair of scissors and cut away a one inch square of fabric. As each square was removed, the couple was slowly unclothed. I would think two strategic snips could make the outfits quickly fall to the floor, but I suppose the cuts were supervised in a grid pattern. I never did see over the crowd to find out. Before I left, I was once again tempted by a sketch opportunity when I saw a nude woman painted silver and elevated on stilts which were hidden under a graceful silver skirt. She was Voguing for photographers however which made her an unpredictable twisting turning subject to sketch. Oh well perhaps I’ll catch her tomorrow night. Parking near a large event like this I always fear that my car might get towed for profit. Thankfully it was where I left it.

She went in like a lamb and came out like a tiger.

The make up preparation work by  Nick Herrera on Anya took hours to do. All of their patient work would be used for a poster photo shoot for Nude Nite. Since it was only mid-afternoon, I took the luxury of starting a second sketch. This time I moved in closer to the model so I could catch all the detail work being done on her face. Nick used an airbrush to add the subtle coloring on her facial fur. He added longer sheets of fur around her jaw leading up to her ears and blended it in. Make up on the table sported the label “SFX” which was the only visual clue that Nick had been on SYFY’s Naked Vegas and Face Off shows. Actually SFX or “Special Effects” might be a generic brand of make up, but I choose to think he won it from his time on those reality shows.

I finished this sketch just as Nick was about to start doing the body painting on Anya’s torso. Before they started, I got up to shake Nick’s hand and thank him for letting me sketch the creative process. Nick asked me to wait a moment and he rushed off. He came back with a little milk crate and placed it beside me. He gave Anya his cell phone and asked her to take a photo of the two of us. He then stood on the milk crate beside me. I joked that he had been in LA for too long. He replied “If it is good enough for Tom Cruise, its good enough for me.”

Kelly Stevens, the director of Nude Nite let me know that Nick Herrera the body painter (who is known for his roles on SYFY’s Naked Vegas and Face Off shows) was sculpting a tiger prosthesis for our Model Anya’s face. It takes 3 hours to create the effect.  The photo shoot would be at the Orange Studio (1121 North Mills Avenue, Orlando, FL). When I walked in the back door, there was a small section of the space that was blocked off with movable walls and curtains. It was a bit like a temporary triage area. Anya and her mom were waiting for Nick to begin. He already had the face prosthesis made that would give Anya a tiger’s shaped nose.

Nick had borrowed a several thousand dollar toy that somehow adds fur to any surface using static electricity. The device looked like a large policeman’s flashlight. The fur was cut up and put in the head of the device. It was then plugged in and Nick tapped it like he was a chef adding pepper to a dish. As if by magic the fur appeared on the prosthesis. It could then be combed and  trimmed if needed. I’ve never seen anything like that before.

Anya sat in the model’s chair and Nick took much care in getting the edges of the prosthesis to flow smoothly into her skin. He had a photo of a tiger’s face on a tablet and he quickly blocked in the orange and white color pattern on her face. Anya seemed rather quiet and reserved, but as Nick worked his magic, she began to look fierce and menacing. Nick took about 5 hours to create the Tiger, so he was there
from approximately 3pm until shoot time at 7pm preparing her. Body painting,
tiger glowing contacts, prosthesis (ears, cheekbones, nose, etc.) The photo shoot was supposed to happen by 7pm, so Nick had to work fast. The photographer was Charity DeMeer and Art Director Jeff Matz of Lure Design.
