Birkbeck, Duff and Ball

On June 20th (Third Thursday), The Gallery at Avalon Island featured musicians Rick Birkbeck, Duff and Ball at the opening reception for The Imprint Show. A large fabric instillation grappled its way through the entry where the main exhibit was and where the musicians performed. Naomi Butterfield was there listening and Terry and I joined her. One of the musicians was related to Naomi, but I don’t recall the links on the family tree. The musicians had to perform over the ever louder conversations that erupted around the art.

The Imprint show featured all women artists including Dina Mack and Leslie Silvia. Dina and Leslie’s work are exact opposites visually. Dina had quiet abstracts that featured white on white while Leslie’s work had black paper cutouts that boldly featured folklore bordering on nightmares. Britty Metty aka Brittany Metz, had a complex installation that resembled an alter with an illuminated Virgin Mary that had her skull shattered. Stuffed animals and an intricate assortment of found objects were piled up at the Virgin’s feet.

This was the evening of the last game in the NBA Finals, so Terry wanted to go to Frank & Stein’s (150 South Magnolia Avenue Orlando, FL) for some hot dogs and watch the game. It was an exciting game, with the Miami Heat winning. Towards the end of the game, Frankie Messina, Naomi and several others stopped in to watch the climax of the game. Frankie gave several of us “Emblems of Power” necklaces made by Mo4us Da Heru. Mine was an all black bead necklace with a golden cross encased in a black cube.

The Vault

On Tuesday June 11th, my wife Terry and a co-worker Psi from Merrill Lynch offered an informational seminar for prospective clients at The Wine Room (270 S Park Ave Winter Park, FL). The building had once been a bank, and the meeting, in the basement, was literally in a bank vault. The thick steel door with its multiple pistons and gears was an impressive sight. The vault now has private lockers where clients can lock away their expensive and dusty bottles of vintage wines.

I can’t discuss the power point demonstration. After it was over, the plush leather chairs were turned to face the TV so  sports fans could watch the NBA finals.  I began to sketch after the presentation was over. Staff came in to clean up the table full of cheeses and crackers. By the final quarter of the game, Terry and I were the only ones left in the vault. We had to move upstairs so the vault could be cleaned up.

NBA Finals

Terry and I like to go out to watch the NBA Finals games. We decided to go to Bar Louie’s (7335 West Sand Lake Road). When we walked in, we were literally the only patrons in the place. Terry picked a high top table with a view of the bank of flat screen TV’s above the bar. I ordered a macaroni and cheese dish that was really good. There were five cheeses and a light dusting of crunchies on top. Once I finished eating, I sipped my Blue Moon and sketched the bar hoping someone would enter to populate the scene.

The pre-game show had closed captions scrawling across the top of the screen. Terry asked the bartender to turn them off. He fumbled with multiple remote controls with no luck. He gave up. Terry spotted one TV on the opposite side of the bar without the captions so she moved. When I finished my sketch I joined her. The Miami Heat won this game 103 to 84. It was a blow out. Yet the next game the San Antonio Spurs blew the Heat out of the water. The Spurs had Danny Green who kept sinking 3 point baskets from downtown. It seemed like he couldn’t miss.

On my sketch I wrote, NBA Playoffs, even though it was the finals. That shows you how much I know about basketball.
