COVID-19 Detection Dogs

Dogs smell in technicolor. They have 300 million sensors in their nose whereas human only have 6 million. In the past, dogs have been employed to sniff out drugs and explosives and even some medical conditions such as cancer. Now they have been trained to sniff out COVID-19.

COVID detection dogs have been employed y the Miami Heat to find out if fans have COVID-19 before they are seated for a game. People waiting to enter the stadium must stand on dots six feet apart and a dog walks along the line and if COVID is detected they will sit down. The breakdown process in the body that occurs with infections or cancers leads to the release of odor molecules called volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These VOCs then enter the air where the scent can be picked up by a properly trained dog.

An international airport in Helsinki also employs COVID detection dogs. Passengers are asked to wipe their neck and forehead with a napkin and that napkin is put in a canister. In another room, the canisters are lined up and the dog sniffs each cup in turn, If the scent of COVID is found the dog will tap the ground with it’s paw and get a treat. On concern is the possibility that a dog might itself become infected sniffing so many samples. So far the have been found to rarely get infected. During preliminary tests at the University of Helsinki, dogs were able to detect the coronavirus in a sample with almost 100 percent certainty. THey even believe dogs are more accurate that available COVID test kits. The university found that dogs can also identify a Covid-19 case days before a person began showing symptoms. One of the Helsinki airport dogs, Kössi, has years of experience searching for signs of disease in medical samples, according to YLE in July. The eight-year-old greyhound mix learned to identify samples from Covid-19 patients in just seven minutes, according to the airport’s statement.

NBA Finals

Terry and I like to go out to watch the NBA Finals games. We decided to go to Bar Louie’s (7335 West Sand Lake Road). When we walked in, we were literally the only patrons in the place. Terry picked a high top table with a view of the bank of flat screen TV’s above the bar. I ordered a macaroni and cheese dish that was really good. There were five cheeses and a light dusting of crunchies on top. Once I finished eating, I sipped my Blue Moon and sketched the bar hoping someone would enter to populate the scene.

The pre-game show had closed captions scrawling across the top of the screen. Terry asked the bartender to turn them off. He fumbled with multiple remote controls with no luck. He gave up. Terry spotted one TV on the opposite side of the bar without the captions so she moved. When I finished my sketch I joined her. The Miami Heat won this game 103 to 84. It was a blow out. Yet the next game the San Antonio Spurs blew the Heat out of the water. The Spurs had Danny Green who kept sinking 3 point baskets from downtown. It seemed like he couldn’t miss.

On my sketch I wrote, NBA Playoffs, even though it was the finals. That shows you how much I know about basketball.

Grand Bohemian

I went downtown to the Grand Bohemian Hotel to meet Terry after work for a drink and appetizer. My plan was to go to the Amway Center afterwards, perhaps to sketch plastic bucket drummers on the street. I had several happy hour drinks however and decided it was too cold outside to be sketching. The Grand Bohemian is where the visiting Miami Heat players were staying. Terry told me she looked out her office window and saw a huge crowd of fans surrounding the team bus. The basketball game started as we were sipping our drinks.  We could see the commentators and behind them the Amway Center looked more than half empty. I don’t think the Orlando Magic fans knew their home team would be trounced. The bartender changed the station to a college game once the Magic took to the court. Artist Donna Dowless was dropping off one of her paintings in the Grand Bohemian Gallery. She waved as she was leaving.

Terry left and decided to scout out the activity around the Amway Center. Happy hour ended as I was working on the sketch. The waitress offered me one more Blue Moon at the happy hour rate anyway. I got a text from Terry and she let me know that I had made the right decision to sketch the hotel bar, the streets around the Amway Center were deserted.
