Bike Polo Requires Xtreem Sport Dexterity

On June 5th, I went to Langford Park (1808 East Central Blvd Orlando FL), around 6pm to watch an Orlando Bike Polo match. Not everyone had arrived yet so the bikers sat and talked. They flipped their bikes over and tuned them. The front wheels on several bikes had the spokes covered which I imagine is to keep the ball from passing through. Each contestant had a mallet which was long enough to reach the ground and was often used as a kick stand by the goalies who kept their feet on the peddles.

Once enough players arrived the split up into two teems with three bikers per team. The action is fast and furious. One of the younger bikers was working on a hopping maneuver to change directions.  He would stop and balance the bike in location and then hop up and down to change directions. Crashes were quite common. One wheelie resulted in the bike flying out from under the rider who landed hard on his tailbone. Another biker skidded into the fence inches from me. At the start I asked if I’d be out of the way leaning against the fence. As a spectator however, you are better off standing, so you can jump out of the way in case of a headlong crash.

As the first match was winding down, more bikers arrived to play in the second match. These Bike Polo matches happen every Friday starting around 6pm. Stop out to watch or play sometime. This is a unique urban experience.

“The Muse” Brings the Magic of Fimmaking to Langford Park

On June 16th, I went to Langford Park, (1808 E Central Blvd, Orlando, FL) to sketch a film shoot. The Director, Matthew Carroll invited me to sketch a day of filming. The production company, Ragtag Troupe Productions is managed
by its founders, Mathew  and Amy Jo Bursley. When I got to the park I walked to a small wooden amphitheater following props and the sound of conversation. Actors chatted with each other but I didn’t see any film equipment. I explained that I was there to sketch the production and they pointed me towards the children’s playground. I joked that this must be the green room and and actor exclaimed that “It doesn’t get much greener that this” as he gestured towards the sun filled trees with a flourish.

Near the playground I found actor Will Warriner and young actress Kelly Wilson seated under a tree with a film crew surrounding them. Will played Hank, a ragtag performer who was sharing his life experiences with Rose, a young girl who finds herself in a surreal world. The main action in this scene involved Rose limping into frame using a crutch, she leans the crutch against the tree and crouches down to talk to Hank. During his monologue he hands her a balloon. Because of the camera’s view, he had to retake several shots and choke in his hold on the string to keep the balloon in field. The scene was performed multiple times with the camera moved between takes to allow for multiple shots when it comes time to edit the scene together.

The film, called, “The Muse” is an artistic short film
inspired by the works of Terry Gilliam. The story is a coming of age tale about
a little girl, Rose, who escapes to her fantasy world after hearing an argument
between her parents about money. Once there she meets a traveling troupe of
street performers, each representing a different art form, who pledge to help
Rose on her quest to find this money in order to keep her family together, but
all isn’t what it seems.

Easter Egg Hunt

Bill Stevens the Aide to Commissioner Patty Sheehan of District 4 sent me an e-mail informing me that Easter Egg Hunts are popping up all over Orlando. There two hunts on April 7th, The Colonialtown Neighborhood Association’s Annual Easter Egg Hunt will take place at 9 am on the playground at the Neighborhood Center, 1517 Lake Highland Drive, and another at Lake Como in Lake Como Park at 10:30 AM. This sketch was done at an Easter Egg Hunt in Langford Park. That Easter Bunny seems to be everywhere at once. This little boy was searching for eggs around the picnic table I was sketching from. His mom helped keep him motivated but when he couldn’t find any more eggs, he started to cry.

Photo opportunities were the main order of the day. The bunny waved incessantly as children scampered and ran around him. It must be hot in there. I don’t know how people survive in the boiling sun dressed as Disney characters for the tourists. I once heard that Winnie the Poo was thrown into a bush by a gang of teenagers. What did Poo ever do to deserve that? There is no way they are paid enough for the sacrifice. A bunny might get an attitude. Happy Easter.
