It was a cool evening, with a brisk breeze. The gallery itself was constantly crowded and thus warm and cozy with the buzz of conversations. The La Empanada  food truck was outside offering dinner options. The great thing about this intimate studio was the view from the front window which overlooks Lake Virginia. I sat across the street to take in the overall view of the gallery. Behind me the sun set behind the lake warning the scene with the warm light of the golden hour. I adjusted colors constantly as I chased the light.

Tables were arranged so people could stand outside and chat as they ate dinner or had drinks, which were free. After the sketch was done, joined in at a table where artists were gathered. We discussed an incredibly detailed masters thesis project, and laughed about how it might be simplified. Then the conversation turned to the romance of the streets of Paris.

The gallery will be open from 10-5pm on most days. Check the website for hours.

The In-Between Series where you can expect the unexpected.

The In-Between Series takes place every month on the Monday before each Third Thursday at The Gallery at Avalon Island (39 S Magnolia Ave, Orlando, Florida). Thad Anderson’s Sextet performed in January 2015 to kick off the monthly series of New Music. When I hear sextet, I imagined classical musicians with violins, cellos and flutes. This sextet however was all about pure primal new age drumming. A large Critique computer screen was set up in front of the phalanx of drums to display the sheet music.

Ashley Equality Inguanta created an installation stage set that had a small porcelain Virgin Mary with a small vile of perfume or holy water, and rose pedals on the alter and floor. A small rug was set up in front of the alter so that anyone could kneel down if they wanted to. Unfortunately no one stopped at the alter long enough to be included in the sketch.

La Empanada Food Truck was parked in the alley next door, so there was plenty of good food available along with drinks from the Avalon Bar. Sketching to the drums beat loosened up my lines and made me throw washes down with much more vigor.

The next concert at The Gallery at Avalon Island will feature Chris Corsano and
Bill Orcutt on Monday December 28th. The doors will open at 7pm and the
concert will begin at 8pm. All ages are welcome. Click here to check out the event Facebook page for more information.

Tasty Tuesdays

Mark your Calendar! Every Tuesday between 6pm and 10pm Food Trucks gather in a parking lot in the Milk District for Tasty Tuesdays. The Trucks used to park on the street but local restaurants complained and a city ordinance shut down that practice. The parking lot is behind Spacebar (2421 East Robinson Street, Orlando FL). So food trucks can sell food in parking lots and driveways but they can’t do business on the streets. It’s a shame food vendors have to hide in back alleys yet prostitutes can work the streets.

It looks like Andrew Spear started a mural on the wall behind Space Bar. Terry told me about another local artist who agreed to do three murals for $1000 and he posed in front of an Andrew Spear mural for the announcement. If you consider the number of hours it will take to cover 3 walls with paint, that artist will be making well below minimum wage. A house painter would probably charge more to cover those walls with one coat of semigloss paint. Posing in front of someone else s work and claiming it as your own is just insane.

While doing this sketch I was given a business card by a fellow who just started an awning company. He suggested I could paint large logos on awnings that need them. I don’t know if there is money in that type of endeavor but I’ll consider anything.  With the sketch done, I decided to order an Empanada from La Empanada Food Truck. It was pre-prepaired so I didn’t have to wait. I ordered the sweet potato & goat cheese for $3.50. It had roasted sweet potatoes with shallots, thyme, creamy goat cheese and a dash of curry. The outer crust was crunchy and potatoes, cheese and herbs inside were delicious. They gave me a second empanada sample which was filled with chocolate and that was pure heaven.
