Tea Time

Is there such a thing as an animated horror movie? Tea Time was done as a demo with one of my online art students. She had a definite story she wanted to tell about one sister poisoning her sibling. I did a series of thumbnail sketches to explore how the scene might be staged.

If this was to be pushed towards a finished illustration I would need to research the furniture the dresses, and the type of room that would best set the mood.

I didn’t push this further since my goal was to get my student’s work to shine. I offered multiple suggestions and helped push the student work along.

Students who have definite ideas they would like to pursue are the most fun to work with. Today is Saturday and I will be working six hours with 4 students. Tow of them are working on story ideas they are developing. I will be doing thumbnails like this to help inspire them to consider all the possibilities in staging a shot. The goal isn’t for them to copy what I do, but for them to come up with an idea that works best for them.

Tonight after the classes, I might go to Winter Park’s Knowles Memorial Chapel where Dvořák’s Stabat Mater is being performed. I would sketch the chapel and see if the music is audible as I sketch. I also need to re-paint the background in a Shakespeare Theater poster. I suspect I will be painting the poster until I collapse and go to bed.

Rollins College

While walking back from an event I sketched in Winter Park, I heard activity over at Rollins College and I decided to cross over Fairbanks Avenue to see what was going on. The large football field was illuminated with stadium lighting. A soccer practice was under way and I had to stop to sketch. The chapel was illuminated a bright blue with spot lights and the upper bell tower windows glowed a golden yellow. A full moon helped lighten the scene as well.

I was sketching trough the chain link fencing for the sake of convenience. One of the players saw me sitting and taking in the scene and he asked me if I was a talent scout for a professional team. Another player had a better guess of what I was up to and I showed him the sketch in progress when he asked to see.

There were a few drills and shots at the net but the huddle in the middle of the field dominated the time I spent sketching. The practice was over and the players dissipated before my sketch was complete. I didn’t linger long since this was a simple landscape scene but the lighting of the field at night would make a good plein air study should I decide to return. The Knowles Memorial Chapel at night is an amazing sight.

Open Rehearsal Rossini’s Stab at Mater.

I went to an open rehearsal at Knowles Memorial Chapel, Rollins College (1000 Holt Ave, Winter Park, FL 32789). Dr. John V. Sinclair was conducting the Bach Festival Choir and Orchestra. It was composed late in his career after retiring from the composition
of opera. Gioachino Rossini began the work in 1831 but did not complete it until 1841. Rossini used his own librettos and compositions for a portion of the work.  Giovanni Tadolini, who composed the remainder with six additional movements. Rossini presented the entirety of the completed work as his own.

I decided to climb a large spiral staircase to get to the upper balconies of the church. From up there I had a god’s eye view of the chorus and orchestra below. Another artist joined me and did an abstract sketch inspired by the music The next concert at the Knowles Chapel is, Insights and Sounds by Paul Moravec. Stephen Tharpe, will be the guest organist.  The concert will be February 17th from 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM. Tickets are $20 – $45.
