Kraken XBB.1.5

Happy New Year.

XBB.1.5 nicknamed Kraken, is the cause of an increase in Covid cases and hospitalizations in New York. This new variant is a recombinant or combined version of two Omicron variants and has an increased level of transmissibility and is highly immune evasive.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) didn’t notice this variant until it  accounted for 40% of new infections in the United States. They were blindsided by the sudden surge. Cases have been doubling exponentially. From literally nowhere, XBB.1.5, aka the Kraken variant, has leapt to 40% of sequences on the US CDC’s weekly-updated variant tracker page. Last week, it wasn’t even listed as a variant.

Why are these figures so stunningly bad? For the simple reason that if you take a hyper-transmissable variant like XBB.1.5 and add a Delta variant like lethality to it, the country, or indeed the entire planet, could be facing an unprecedented and potentially irreversible disaster. The lethality of XBB.1.5 is unknown. It has a great affinity to ACE2, so likely it will be able to infect the lungs and the cardiovascular system with worse outcomes than previous Omicron variants.

XBB.1.5 has a “greatly enhanced” ability to bind to cells. It is a sub variant of Omicron but far more transmissible. “We’re projecting that it’s going to be the dominant variant in the Northeast region of the country and that it’s going to increase in all regions of the country,” said Dr. Barbara Mahon, director of the CDC’s proposed Coronavirus and Other Respiratory Viruses Division, in an interview with CBS News. More than 70% of infections in the regions spanning New Jersey through New England are now from XBB.1.5, the agency projected. Kraken is quickly spreading in Florida, Texas and Washington State.

Hospitalizations continue to tick upwards all across America. The Kraken is coming at a time when most of the public has abandoned masking and every other simple and basic mitigation measure. The Kraken is here to open the New Year. It is is resistant to many of the monoclonal antibody drugs that doctors had relied on earlier in the pandemic.  Omicron has caused more death than any other variant since the start of the pandemic simply because of the huge number of people infected.

The latest bivalent boosters appear to offer better “neutralizing activity” for Omicron variants, including XBB. So if you haven’t had your booster, it is advisable for the new year. The CDC has quietly begun recommending masking indoors but we all know that recommendation will go largely ignored and the lemmings will crowd together and infect one another. At home tests may prove less effective in detecting the new variant. One test, DxTerity’s saliva test for the virus, has proven itself useless.

Creating COVID Frankensteins

CBS News reported that Boston University has been testing strains of the COVID virus they created by combining the ancestral and Omicron variants. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) partially funded the school research but these funds were not directly used to wards this research. and they were rather miffed to find out about this research through news articles. Federal health authorities say they are looking into whether the scientists should have sought their permission before undertaking the possible “gain of function” research. Such research being done in Wuhan back in 2019 could have potentially started the pandemic to begin with.

Scientist were looking into the Omicron variants spike proteins Mice were infected with combined versions of the virus creating a new variant of the virus. Hey what could go wrong, right? Boston University said it was under no obligations to report this gain of function research to the NIH.

100% of the mice infected with the original Wuhan strain of the virus died. When mice were infected with the recombinant strains created by researchers 80% of the mice died. What joy it must have brought researches to find they had created a strain with an 80% mortality rate.

“It is concerning that this research – like the research in Wuhan that may have caused the pandemic – was not identified by the funding agency as possible enhanced potential pandemic pathogens (ePPP) research,” Rutgers University Professor Richard Ebright wrote on Twitter.

Don’t Get Vaccinated

A black Wilmore Funeral House truck  had “Don’t Get Vaccinated” emblazoned on it’s side. This messanging was actually Part of a Pro-Vaccine Campaign. The truck that circled outside of the Bank of America Stadium in North Carolina during Sunday’s Carolina Panthers game, CNN reported. Wilmore Funeral House is nonexistent, however — the creation of ad agency BooneOakley. When internet users access the website, the landing page has a message that simply states, “Get vaccinated now. If not, see you soon.” The page also has a link to StarMed, which allows people to register to get vaccinated at health care providers in the area.

Last month in Florida over 9500 people have died from COVID-19. Bringing the total number of deaths from COVID in the Sunshine State to over 54,000. That is about double the number of deaths compared to a country like Canada.

Business is too good for funeral directors. Funeral homes and grave diggers have to struggle to keep up with the demand. In Florida, according to CBS News, employees of funeral homes are absolutely swamped. In July 2021, the CDC reported that one in five new COVID-19 cases in the United States was occurring in Florida. CBS News’ Khristopher J. Brooks explained, “In the last week of August 2021, Florida hospitals averaged 279 deaths per day — up from 52 in July, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The spike in fatalities, is strongly suspected to stem from the ongoing surge in cases caused by the Delta variant.

Capitol Police Infected

38 Capitol Police have tested positive for COVID-19 after the attack on January 6, 2021. Health officials have worried that the thousands of unmasked Trump supporters who  stormed the Capitol would cause a super-spreader event that could expose local residents and law enforcement officers to coronavirus. The new cases at the Capitol Police, which were first reported by the New York Times, mark the highest spike among force in months.

The officer’s union could also not confirm that those officers were on duty the day of the attack. Several police officers were directly assaulted during the insurrection.

Approximately 150 National Guard troops have also tested positive since the attack, CBS News reported.

Gus Papathanasiou, chairman of the U.S. Capitol Police Labor Committee said, “The union had been pushing the department for testing and recently pushing for vaccines, but the incompetence of the USCP chiefs of police, both former and current with the new acting chief and assistant chiefs, speaks volumes of the lack of leadership at the top of the USCP,” in an emailed statement to DCist/WAMU he said. “The continued systemic failures ‎of this Department is unacceptable and the congressional community as well as the officers that put their lives on the line every day deserve better than being led by inept chiefs of police.”

Steven Sund, the Capitol Police chief, stepped down from his role following the riots, and Yogananda Pittman was named acting chief, becoming the first woman and first Black officer to lead the force. A number of Capitol Police officers were suspended and at least a dozen were investigated for their involvement in or support of the violence.

The Metropolitan Police Department, which at one point led the effort to clear the angry mob from the Capitol, has also seen an uptick in COVID-19 cases. As of January 6, 2021 a total of 498 MPD personnel had tested positive over the course of the pandemic. By Jan. 21, that number had jumped by 82, reaching 580 total cases. It appears to be one of the biggest jumps in positive cases in the recent data.
