Sara Knee-ds You!

On August 13th I went to Redlight Red Light (2810 Corrine Drive, Orlando, FL) to attend a fundraiser for barkeep Sara who had an unfortunate accident. While working out at the gym, she tore the lateral meniscus in her right knee almost in half. The injury left her unable to work, walk, or bike (which is her only form of transportation). The surgery and physical therapy required to get her back on her feet is going to cost between 7,000 and 10,000 dollars. While she has the love and support of friends in the time being, surgery is imminent and will need to take place in the near future to avoid permanent damage. Being that the price tag is a wee-bit heavy, Redlight Red Light hosted a benefit in her honor to help her raise the funds she needs to recover to get back to slingin’ beers and stealthy biking.

Some special kegs were tapped and all of the proceeds were donated to her surgery. Since I’m a fan of drinking for a cause, I ordered one of Sara’s beers to sip as I sketched. Erica Abalos-Hernandez, formerly of Bee’s Knees had some huge chocolate chip cookies for sale. She explained that there was a dash of sea salt on them which compliments the sweetness. I had to try one. It was so good, especially washed down with the beer. Later she walked the room with someones child on her hip. Sarah took her place behind the chocolate chip station with her crutches leaning up against a table next to her. I spoke with her briefly about biking in Orlando. She lives downtown and used to bike everywhere. She knows all the back roads routes to Redlight Red Light. She described her knee injure in some grizzly detail and I was glad I could help out in my way. The room grew crowded as I sketched. It was heart warming to see so many people coming together to help someone in the community.

When I ordered a second beer, my sketch started looking pretty good. Donated beer bottles filled a pew and several tables. There were silent auction items such as gift baskets, a meal for two at The Table (a value of $240) and $100 meal at Eola Wine Company. Donated items also came from Black Bean Deli, Will’s Pub, Dear Prudence, Oblivion Taproom, Wild Ocean Seafood, the Enzian, the Gnarly Barley, College Park Yoga, Stacole Fine Wines, Imperial, Sushi Lola’s, Lineage Coffee Roasting, and others. Artwork was also being auctioned off.

The Sara Knee-ds You! Fundraiser was a huge success. With everyone’s
generosity,  $6,500 was raised towards barkeep Sara’s
knee surgery and physical therapy. Sara said, “To
everyone who attended on Tuesday, donated, raffled, drank some beer,
brought me coffee, drove me around, made me food, offered me a piggy
back ride, or sent some thoughtful words my way, my sincerest gratitude.
Because
of the overwhelming amount of support I’ve received from friends,
patrons, and small businesses in our community, I will be able to fund
my surgery. I wish I had more than words to express how
thankful I am. Witnessing the generosity in people has been a wonderful,
humbling, life changing experience. There is no feeling more amazing
than realizing you are not alone. Thank you.”

Taco Tuesdays

Mark Tour Calendar, every Tuesday is $2 Taco Tuesday at Wall Street Cantina in Wall Street Plaza (19 N. Orange Ave., Orlando , FL). The event includes $2 tacos, tequila shots, Cantinaritas and Corona and Corona Light beers. Tacos start flying from 2pm to 2am. I decided to do a sketch early in the day to surprise Terry who works downtown and loves Tacos. I figured I’d do a sketch and then call her at work to surprise her. Well the best laid plans go astray, when the sketch was finished I called only to find out she was out getting a massage in Maitland. I decided to order a second taco and keep working on the sketch.

As 5pm rolled around the place really started filling up. A group of white collar business men muscled up to the bar and grew louder. The waitress in a green T-shirt kept checking on my progress and she stoked my soda caffeine fix.  The $2 Tacos are only available in beef, but they were good. I headed home at rush hour to get some work done on the Urban Sketcher’s guide which is almost finished.

Musical Mondays

On March 11th Terry and I met at The Fifth (112 S. Orange Ave., Orlando, Florida) between 7Pm and 9PM for Kelly DeWayne Richards Musical Mondays. Kelly is playing all over town now. On Fridays he performs at Parliament House, Sunday Nights between 6PM and 9PM, he is at Hanson’s Shoe Repair (27 East Pine Street), and on Thursdays between 6PM and 9PM he is at Pilars on Plant street in Winter Garden right next to the Garden theater also between 6PM and 9PM. Hanson’s sounds intriguing since it is a speakeasy and you need to know the password to get in.

The great thing about Musical Mondays is that actors who love to sing musicals show up in droves. Actress Jessi Riese announced that she will be moving to NYC so this was one of the last chances to see her sing. Terry got up and Sang a Sondheim song. Kelly asked the manager to turn on the rooms pink lights since he knew it would look good for my sketch.The highlight of the evening was when the entire room sang along with a song from Rent. As one singer pointed out, “Hearing so many talented singers is like getting a $75 ticket show for free.”

Spacebar Tournament Marvel vs. Capcom

On February 19th, I went to the Milk District’s Spacebar,( 2428 E. Robinson Street, Orlando), to sketch an arcade game tournament. The grand prize would be a $25 bar tab.
The event started at 10 p.m.I had never been to Spacebar before. The bar was super crowded when I entered. One wall had vintage arcade games like Ms. Pac Man and pinball machines. The Marvel and Capcom machines I believe were first person fighters although it was hard to see the screens from my vantage point.

Since there were no seats available with a good view, I sat on my artist stool next to the door. The proprietor asked me what I was up to. I explained about the blog since he might have been thinking I was some weird homeless guy who brings his own seat into bars.  I asked for a light fruity beer and he suggested a German beer called Wittekerke. It was good. I sipped it slow as I sketched.

It was hard to tell exactly when the tournament began since there were always people playing. Artist, Chris Tobar stopped by to say hello. He has work scattered all around town in a show he calls “The Adventures of my Dexterous Shadow” and he is having a scavenger hunt where art patrons have to take pictures of each piece to prove they saw it. The winner would get a free print.

The crowd had thinned a bit by the time the tournament began at 10p.m. In the end Paul Andrade won the grand prize. As I was packing up, the proprietor and his lovely bar maid stopped over to see the sketch. He hadn’t expected to see color. When I asked how much I owed for the beer, he said it was on the house. Whoo hooo! We have a winner!

Taste Jazz

Since I have been working till 9PM at Full Sail, I have been searching for late evening sketch opportunities. Monday Night Jazz at Taste (717 W. Smith Street in College Park) has become a standard Monday Night ritual. They have an early set from 7PM to 9PM and then a later set from 9:30PM to 11:30PM. My sketch is usually finished before the evening of music wraps. All sorts of musicians gather in the bar area and different musicians rotate in for each jam session.

I order a Blue Moon beer and some tater tots to munch on as I sketch.  The young couple at the table in front of me were obviously on a date just getting to know each other. As always the music was lively and spontaneous. My goal at these late night sketch outings is to get a quick sketch done then get home before Terry goes to sleep.

Gator’s Dockside

Terry and I went to Gator’s Dockside, (5142 Dr. Phillips Blvd. Orlando, FL), to watch the football Playoffs with the San Francisco 49ers playing the Atlanta Braves. Surprisingly the place wasn’t very crowded. As the game went on more people gradually filtered in. The guy at the table next to us watched the game alone and he argued with Terry about certain calls the referees made. Very late in the game, his wife and children joined him. Don’t ask me who won the game, I wasn’t facing the large flat screen TVs.

The guy at the table in front of us had an iPad still in its cardboard box. I guess he never takes it out to protect it from harm. He checked the iPad constantly throughout the game. Maybe there is a game statistics site that updates as the game is happening.  His girlfriend was busy talking to friends on her phone. I did my best to avoid catching any one’s gaze as I sketched them. The second you catch someones gaze, they consider that an invitation to see what you are up to and your clandestine cover is blown.

I ordered a Tail Gate Burger and it was so big I couldn’t open my jaw wide enough to take a bite of it. I ended up eating half of it using a knife and fork. The waitress kept me well stocked with Mountain Dew. Whenever there was an uproar I would glance at the TV screen. There was a moment when a players knee gave out and his leg twisted with horrific torque. It was played back repeatedly in slow motion. It was horrible to watch, but obviously I did watch when I could have been sketching. Today is the Super Bowl. I don’t know who is playing but I’ll be there to sketch and watch the commercials.

I just came back from the supermarket where I found out that the Ravens are playing the 49ers based  on all the helium balloons in the produce section.  I’ll be rooting for the 49ers since I like their red and gold uniforms. As a kid I used to get a mini NFL helmet from a gumball machine every Sunday and I always liked the 49ers helmet logo. Mark my words, they can’t lose.

Monday Night Jazz at Taste

I have been working a late shift at Full Sail from 5PM to 9PM. That means I’ve had to search for events that go late into the evening. Jazz at Taste (717West Smith Street in College Park) fits the bill. Danny Grudal, Chris Muda and Michael Wells started a set when I arrived. I ordered some crispy tater tots, a beer and got to work. Different musicians joined in for different jams. A saxophone player I had met at Terrace 390’s Jazz event said hello.

This is a great way to relax after a hectic day. Soloists would take the music and improvise their own riff on top of it. When a performer got lost in the moment, the audience at the bar and tables would root him on with laughter, clapping and shouts. It is quite addictive. I nodded my head to the beat and tapped my foot as I sketched. I tried to let the lines flow unhindered.

These Jazz sets happen every Monday Night from about 9PM to 11PM. There is no cover.

Florida Creatives Happy Hour

On November 19th, the Florida Creatives Happy Hour was held at The Courtesy, (114 North Orange Avenue Orlando, FL). The Florida Creatives happy hour happens on the third Monday of every month. Things get started at 6PM and go until 9PM or later most months. The Courtesy is a new establishment in an old building riding the “mixology” wave – they make some interesting cocktails and serve up craft beer and wine too. They are in that building that was boarded up for the past few years at the corner of Washington and Orange Avenue downtown. Don’t let that scare you off, it’s a really great new place. 
If you’re not into cocktails or beer, the Courtesy makes their own sodas and carries some excellent Ginger Ales and non-alcoholic delights.

Ryan Price, who organizes the event greeted me as I considered what to order at the bar. He advised me to try a beer and I took his advice. It was a decent ale. Dana Mott joined us at a corner table which had a large birds nest as a light fixture. Ryan was anxious because the Fringe was holding it’s lottery that night to see which shows would go into the 2013 Festival. Ryan submitted a show idea which involved improvisation around a classic Hitchcock Murder Mystery called “39 Steps”, originally a book by John Buchan. It was fortuitous that Dana was there because she had years of improve experience having studied with Jeff Wirth who has since moved to NYC. I sketched as they chatted about the creative possibilities. Ryan had to leave early to get to the lottery. It turned out that he will be in the 2013 Fringe Festival and I can’t wait to see what becomes of the idea. Terry came out to say hello and then she and Dana left and I finished my sketch up on my own. The proprietor saw what I was working on and offered me a free beer. I already had two under my belt and I had to get home so I had to refuse the offer.

On February 4th at Chase Plaza on the 10th floor, come and join some of the passionate creative minds of Orlando in one of the longest-running happy hour meetups in the state of Florida (almost 6 years!). Be sure to check the Florida Creatives website since the venue can change month to month. The goal is to provide a safe environment to share your schemes, unearth passions and meet mentors or co-founders. There is always get a pretty diverse representation – lately there have been graphic designers, lawyers, illustrators, city planners, start up founders, tech folks and a plethora of others.

This is by far one of the best ways to “get involved” in the community. The people at this Happy Hour are plugged in to what is going on and who is doing it.

Beautiful Beloved

Kassandra Kharis was an exotic and beautiful local artist who unfortunately chose to leave this world. I never met Kassandra but I did like her dark and mysterious art. On MySpace she had 6818 friends and she reached a Facebook limit with 5656 friends. As she wrote in her Facebook bio, “I
am an indecisive being, but loyal to a fault. An introverted extrovert,
I get anxiety in the most ‘usual’ of places and go into agoraphobia
mode from time to time, so good job we have the Internet, for the people
who can’t stand to be around people, yet don’t want to feel totally
alone either.”

I went to Bombshell’s Tavern, (5405 Edgewater Drive, Orlando), where a charity art event was going to he held in her honor. I went on the wrong date however, but I ordered a beer in her memory and did a sketch anyway. The pool table was active all night with the regular customers joking and competing for hours in this smokey dive bar. The jukebox supplied the 80s tunes. The game was briefly interrupted by the Olympic swimming event on TV.

The Kassandra Kharis Charity Art Event will be held on Wednesday, August 29st, 2012, from 8pm-2am. It is  being held to celebrate the life of our beloved friend and local artist, Kassandra Kharis. All proceeds will go to pay for her memorial services and excess funds will be donated to the American Humane Association in her name, since her love and concern for animal welfare was so great.

There will be Goth, Industrial and Alt Rock spun by DJ Spank,
Burlesque by Grotesque Burlesque, an Art Auction and Raffles of donated prizes.

Cover charge will be donation based only, so all of her friends can attend, but suggested donation is $5 – $10 for those that can contribute towards her fundraiser.
The event will be ALL AGES so that ALL of her friends and family can attend, though after 11pm, the Burlesque performances by Kass’ friends in Grotesque Burlesque will be taking place in the big stage room, which will be 18+ admittance.

Thursday T&A

I went to Graffiti Junction (900 E Washington Street, Orlando) for Thursday T&A (Trivia and Arts). I arrived a bit early right after work. T&A happens each Thursday from 7 to 9PM. I decided to sketch the ornate fountain that slows traffic through the Thornton Park District. I wonder how many drunk drivers ran into the fountain before they decided to put all those steal barricades around it. I leaned back against the new Mother Falcon Bar. Tables were being set up outside anticipating the evening crowd. Melissa Felcman who is an amazing supporter of the arts, came out and shot a photo of my sketch in progress. For once I didn’t feel like I was in the way. I heard the announcer across the street and when I finished the sketch, I went inside Graffiti Junction for a burger and Trivia.
